IMO, fixing bugs is a top priority for any new update, and when I say bugs, I mean real bugs. That said; some bugs are worse than others. Those which can be worked around and cause mere inconveniences don't demand the same immediate attention as those bugs which cannot. And worse of all IMO are those rare bugs which cause data loses. So again, it seems to me that BR's should generally be the first priority, starting with those that are the most severe first, then on to the extremely annoying and troublesome and finally on to the merely counterintuitive functions and those which verge on interface refinements. I guess we've all used software full of half-baked features which are only out-numbered by the software's un-addressed bugs. Please Mackie never let Tracktion go that route.

On to the feature request... Seems to me that Mackie listens to it's userbase regarding which features are most dear to us here at the Raw Material Forum. I hope they take note and make the users' priorities their own. But, I feel sure they must also balance demand for any given request with the time needed to implement that request. I would love to see acid-like looping capabilities but I realize its implementation might take much longer a new key shortcut's for example.

When looking at the favorite feature request...

Code: Select all

... it's interesting to speculate how long implementing some of these request would take. Personally, I wish Mackie would go through and implement the easiest ones right away, even before my favorites. Then, after knocking out the easy ones (in their estimation), let them start working their way down the list.

I feel confident that Mackie has some of their own ideas and features in development, ones that they believe will help bring Tracktion to a broader market and they may even have more features in the works which will offer additional support for their hardware products. I don't ever remember any clamor on the forum for Mackie HDR File support, Do you? But, hey, that's fine and good, I don't fault them for that at all.

One thing I hope that Mackie doesn't do is delay the introduction of new features in order to spread them out across multiple paid upgrades. I hope they will add the most requested new feature as soon as they can. IMO, making new converts by bringing the best Tracktion possible will raise more money for Mackie that will stringing along multiple updates. Don't get me wrong I expect to and am willing to pay for upgrades in the future, but I sincerely hope that Mackie will not prolong Tracktion's development based on marketing goals.

Finally, I appreciate Beno's attitude towards the users here and hope that the new programmers share his openness. I also hope they have the same enthusiastic desire to see Tracktion reach its full potential that Jules demonstrated in the past.

:)

PS Folder Tracks...

Well said Rock. Can't agree more with bug fixing always being a priority, there is nothing more draining than working with buggie software. Software that has a good rep for less bugs has a lot of invisable good will surrounding it, whereas bug ridden software is cursed to high heaven in silence.

Hear, hear! I wouldn't expect too much openness as in "every T2 programmer showing up here to discuss things" though -- that could easily be more counter-productive than productive in the long run. We are extraordinarily lucky to have a consistantly appearing, friendly "Mackie mouthpiece" like Beno, I think. That's more than most corporately produced competitors have to show for themselves...

Well said, Rock. You're a credit to the Tracktion user base.

Thanks Rock, I agree with what you said. We obviously want Tracktion to be as bug free and feature packed as possible. I think these last batch of updates have shown that we commited to fixing some long standing bugs (render, external midi, PDC) while at the same time giving users some of the smaller features they have been asking for. Hopefully we'll be showing this commitment again in the not too distant future. Stay tuned...

while you may have fixed some bugs and added some cool features, which is awesome by the way and we all appreciate it, you have also introduced more bugs.

1 in particular is the 1st note of an external synth wired up thru midi gets lost.this didnt happen at all in the last release. also midi export is way too picky as it now only works under very specific details.

with said i do appreciate the mackie team and i hate to bring a negative tone to the thread but these bugs are huge showstoppers for me that i never had to deal with in Traktion before.

ps folder tracks!!!!

Rock,

The ACID like loop request # votes is under-reported at 50. Farther down the list are: Native time stretching with 23 votes, and Native Beat Slicing with 5 votes. These are all features of ACID, so I would add those additional 28 votes to the 50 for the ACID like functionality making it at 78. I sort of consider clip grouping in there as well, but that may not be what others were thinking of when they voted for it.

I agree about bugs out first before new features in.

I just hope that Mackie continues their path with Tracktion as intended by Jules. And I hope they will continue to bring the humour factor with the packaging, as they have done for several years now.

We all need some humour, and I love Mackies humour:)

When it comes to BR and FR I totally agree with BR first and FR as a second priority, as it is Tracktion is capable of making wonderful music, but are being held down by it's bugs. I say spend all resources on the next release on bug fixes alone, then in the next release add new features. I reckon that will go down safely in everyones book. Plus, it will ensure that future releases are more or less bug free, IMO.
Say YES to OpenSource Software!!

Bugfixes should be free as well. New Features, put those in the next pay-for-upgrade package.

With all of that said; time and pitch stretching that is actually what a customer expects (not the lame way that T does it now), is not a FR. This was touted by RMS/Macke as a feature of T1, but it wasn't really there. Notoriously left out of T2 advertising. Hmm.

So, is that a feature request or more like an on-going bug report? Seems like the latter to me.

Yeah that came up in the polling period. A couple of us commented that a better time stretching algorhythm would be a member of the set of features required to bring ACID like functionality to Tracktion.

Clip-based automation = yes, please!

Moving a clip, or a bunch of clips, and then having to recreate automation curves point-by-point is not fun. I'm doing it right now... I cut several seconds out of a track right at the start, and now all the curves in the song have to be adjusted. Bleh.
