rachmiel wrote:can anyone recommend good active online forums *dedicated* to experimental/avant electronic music?

no disrespect intended for kvr. i love kvr and will continue to spend lots of time here. but in my experience the experimental wing of a general music forum (like kvr) tends to be a bit marginalized, pretty much by definition, since such a small minority of general listeners/composers are passionate about experimental music.

thanks.

The only other places I visit are:

IHeartNoise
Excellent noise/experimental forum hosted by the folks at PacRec/Troniks. Mostly artists/labels/distros of the DIY type frequent these boards. Great resource for keeping up with goings-on in the various experimental undergrounds.

Less active and more specific in their focus:
Harsh Noise
Exactly what it says. Operated by Stimbox/Harsh Noise Recordings. Again, mostly artists/labels.

Power Electronics Discussions
Focused on power electronics, though other related genres do come up from time to time. As is to be expected from a PE oriented board, topics can be controversial at times - not necessarily a place for the overly politically correct. Mostly artists/labels, but a slightly higher listener membership.

Wierdsounds
Forum hosted by Manifold Records. Not too active, which is too bad since there's a lot of potential there.

I've heard alot of people harping about IHeartNoise, but I don't particularly care for the place. I'll lurk the Gear forum and make occasional posts, but I find that alot of the people there irritate me.

I check it out every other day or so. It's much more current event listing than I had hoped it to be.
That's a new one for me, cheers for the tip off.

I agree with you it's too bad it doesn't seem to have taken off. The sparsity might reflect a common problem with public discussions of this kind of material. You first have to attract enough people interested in the same things, and then have to find enough among those folk who are interested in discussing them. Nothing worse than posting a discussion topic, and all the replies are dismissive one-liners.

Example post: I am interested in the use of the carnival aesthetic in music and using it as a means of voicing political discontent. Anyone have any ideas on doing so?

Example reply 1: Listen to Parliament.
Example reply 2: Just go do it, man.
Example reply 3: Yes.

is it possible that kvr would add an Experimental Wing to its root-level forums? whom would one have to ask for permission?

ben kvr would be the man to approach
i think there is enough support for such a thing but it might be that he sees it as already covered by the other forums ie we can post experimental tracks,we can discuss experimental ideas in any of the other forums and so on.
worth a try tho :)

Another vote for EM411 in terms of online forum. :)

And definitely Grooves Magazine, of course (though I'm obviously more than a bit biased :D).

It would excite me quite much to see an active place such as kvr is which is dedicated to the experimental side of music and sound.

It's true that at the moment threads on the subject are woven throughout kvr; and I do think that such a new forum could be kvr-related, but I can much more see this happening on the outside of kvr yet related to it, rather then experimentalism getting it's own kvr-forum. Since it would half in half imply that other genre's could get their forum as well which I think would diversify too much and ultimately might lead to parochialism.

ehm, I am drifting

In short I am all for it as an experimentalist; perhaps NTNS-radio (not the normal shit-radio) could provide a corner stone here ;)

The clannishness is a bit offputting, as is the mutual-appreciation-society aura that hangs over the proceedings, but it is about the best info source on this sort of thing out there.

I´ve spent the past couple hours looking round the sites dystonia shared and other then a few interesting posts and one or two bookmarks I must say it wouldn´t be places I´d frequent too much. KvR is just in a league of its own and I guess I am spoilt because of that
