Reverse polarity and Panning in T1.6.0.1 the free edition

Hi everyone
I'm still learning how to do things with Tracktion before I buy. I record mid/Side stereo to two tracks. Mid track is cardioid and side track is a figure 8 perpendicular to the sound source. I have no problem with M/S as a technique in analogue outboard mixer etc, it works fine and sounds great.

My problem occurs when I take the recorded Side signal/track and duplicate it in another track. I insert the 4-Band EQ and phase invert the track. In analogue I use a pin-switched xlr cable for this. I mute the Mid track and listen to the 2 side tracks. With one of the tracks polarity reversed the equal and opposite signal cancels everything out and I should, and I do, hear nothing.

By panning each of the two side tracks L & R and unmuting the Mid track I should obtain a "matrixed" Mid/side pair of Left and Right tracks which combine into a stereo image.
In Tracktion I'm getting silence on the side tracks from zero pan all the way out to 0.999.

Can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong. I've tried the various VST mid/side plug-ins without success.
Thanks
Walter
