bluedad - good recommendation. have you heard "series of sneaks"? that's a GREAT album. fun and quirky songs and some interesting production tricks.

Sorry to be pedantic but they're 24kbit/s files not 24bit (as in high quality wave files).

Fine for previewing, I've grabbed a few albums for just that purpose, a bit like listening to them on an am radio.

Actually, without being a total pseud, I like listening to stuff like this; the limited bandwidth doesn't distract you as much if you're working as a bright, sparkly, 192kbps file. Yeah, 'using' music, not giving it it's due yadayada.....

Leech leech leech Peter Namlook, Bill Laswell, Robert Rich, lots of jazz, electronic i've never heard off. Some of the encodes where quite bad though and others ok, I understand they do higher quality encodes now. I was leechin great stuff.

To be honest I downloaded a lot, but after I had heard it and judged, well I deleted a lot as well. But I got some good tunes I would have never heard.

I understood the leechin went crazy when they stopped their unlimited downloads at emusic.com.

Emusic went downhill when they sacked their editors for each music section, and had it all automated by bots, then the management changed. Too bad it's probably not what it used to be. It had a lot of lovin in the older days.

What is the quality of the mp3's at emusic? Couldn't find any info on this...

Most mp3s are VBR. A few are 128, but they are explicitly marked as such, and most of those seemed to have been excised from the archives this past year.

For people inclined towards more eclectic things, they've just added the entire Tzadik back catalog (John Zorn's label), which is 400+ albums. They also have an incredibly good repository of 70s dub.

I was one of the early eMusic leechers myself. Filled nearly a whole drive with stuff before they went to 90 downloads per month. But even now I consider it a great deal as I've located a lot of great world music and some jazz that would have cost a fortune to buy as CD.

Current faves of mine from eMusic:

Plus you can get all the important albums by McCoy Tyner there which is worth the cost of admission by anyone's standards:

His Name is Alive would likely be the first things I'd download, if I didn't already have them all on CD from way back.

I've been impressed with eMusic so far. I look at it like this: $20 a month for 90 tracks of any length; I get upwards of 10-12 hours of music a month which is ideal for commuting; Mp3s aren't as good as CD quality, but the mp3 player fits in my pocket when I'm in transit and the quality of both audio and content are better than radio.

I still buy CDs, just a lot fewer than I used to. And eMusic is the best deal of any these mp3 clearinghouses, and is growing its small-run, hard to find catalog every day. They have a bunch of stuff from less-than-mass-media labels like Anticon, VHF, Darla, Takoma, Relapse/Release, Seeland, etc. (not to mention our fellow KVR brethren at Blue Water Records) It's worth checking out at least for the 50 free downloads.
