the most godawful christmas song ever (imho) is that goddam song the beach boys did with the 'little friggin saint nick' and the friggin 'run run riendeer' repeated in that annoying beach boy way

I try every year to get thru christmas without hearing that thing

Oh, have a go...I can't be the only person on earth wot hates this song, and this particularly naff version.

It's right there with the Singing Dogs (or whatever they were called) sampled and barking their way through 'Jingle Bells.' And yes, fellow humans, that was a BIG hit in the UK twenty-plus years back...

and, oh, you should see some of the shite I've found...

and that people have bought!

... often bought in a befuddled state after a buncha martinis for lunch, or whatever...

However -- pulling myself back together for a moment -- I can confidently claim that, apart from the Dubliners' "Bells of Dublin," something or other by The Roches, the aforementioned "James Brown's Funky Christmas," and perhaps a few classical a cappella church music things related to the solstice by the Anonymous Four, I have in general eschewed the purchase of Xmas music...

My wife and I have a good collection of Rennaisance and Medievel Xmas music, our favorites being the secular dances . . . but otherwise I'm the same way.

Well . . . 4 or 5 years ago I set out to do the ultimate Xmas CD by obtaining and compiling as many versions of Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson as I could find. It was a project I did for my wife as a present, 'cause that's our favorite Xmas song. I ended up with somewhere between 25 and 28 versions (yes of the same song!) all on one CD. It didn't matter if the versions were horrible or great, the point was to find as many versions in as many styles as possible.

But the real fun came when I went to Xmas parties at the homes of friends and coworkers. I'd slip the CD on without telling people what it was. No one EVER realized they were hearing the same song over and over and over and over and over and over and over again!

That's the beauty of that song. It can be done in any style. I don't have the total track list, but off the top of my head it had . . .

Harry Connick Jr.
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir
The Ronettes
Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass
Some US Military band
The 4 Tenors (with THE worst version ever, you could tell they didn't know what the words meant, like when Pavorati sang "Ooooooooooooutside the snow is FALLING and friends are calling HOO HOO!" Pronouced "who who".)
