Actually they are - something along the lines "rigidly quantized" is mentioned very often...drez wrote:jmh wrote:Exactly - it ain'tdrez wrote:So quantizing notes to sixteenths is creative?jmh wrote:So, autotuning the bejesus out of the vocals is now creative?
At least the direction is now the Cher effect...![]()
I'm just sayin that people aren't sittin here bitchin about all the people that are quantizing their drums or using "groove templates" which are doing the same type of correction that autotune is.
Quantizing is considered ok, but autotuning isn't. Seems like a double standard.
And neither is creative 'as is'.
Anyways, at least earlier I thought that the point was the blatant overuse of the technology and my remark was towards that, and it still stands - there's really nothing creative whatsoever about using a dated effect especially so soon after it was 'a big thing'.
Kind of sums up my thoughts on Madonna actually - rehashing 'new things' slightly after they've made their way to the public anyways. And doing it badly in the process.
And then the ignorant masses (that's where the money is) call that artistry, talent, 'being hip', creative... sigh. To me, she's a product, one that still hasn't even learned to sing properly after all these years (autotuning or no), riding on other peoples' talents, becoming an icon in the process. The good old "anything to gain attention", not even taken to a direction reaching anything original, never was and never will.
Pop at its best&worst simultaneously. I guess that's a merit in itself.
(Ray of light is still an amazing record though, I can only dream of what a marvellous experience it would have been with a decent singer (and without that one crap indian or whatever piece of garbage track stuck in the middle of otherwise excellent pieces!))
