what's the best host for real-time jams (vs. composition)?

ALthough Live is great, it still operates in the realm of a 'linear' paradigm which is not necessary in my particular application. I'm sorry if I can't define what I mean by linear - although my application is not necessarily sequence based.
I'm going to investigate Project5 one more time.
Thanks everyone for the input.
Greg
My complaint sometimes about Live is that it is not linear enough. Have you really worked with it in the session arrangement?

Not sure what your gonna find in Project 5 that isn't in Live, other than a clunky interface. A lot of the ideas in Project 5 v2 were lifted straight out of Live anyway.

Cool. Let me know if you have any questions, I'll check back over the next couple days. I haven't had any problems with VSTs crashing Project5 except for once. I loaded NI's B5, and it asked me to insert the CD to proove I owned it. I didn't feel like digging it out, and it crashed when I hit cancel. Other than that no problems at all. That was with project5 version 1. I have not had any trouble with version 2. I'd swear it's the most stable thing in my studiosiriusbliss wrote:I'm now leaning towards Project5, but might change my mind after playing around with it some more. Apparently the vst is turned off on the demo, so it doesn't tell me anything about stability, flexibility, etc.
I'm enjoying the videos.

I have both P5v1&2 and Live 5. Live gets pretty much all the play because of stability and the midi editor is a 1000% better than P5's.maoinhibitor wrote:Cool. Yes, I see the resemblance between Project5 and Live 5. Not sure yet to what extent I'm even going to need a MIDI editor.
The Project5 demo doesn't handle vst's, and even locked up when I tried to load a simple plugin. Still investigating.
Will be checking out audiomulch next. I have an old copy of it somewhere.

You'll need the latest version of Audiomulch from its site (which is all spiffy and new, don't know when that happened).
The current unregistered version is good until December 20 (fully functional). Old copies are hard coded to expire on a specific date three months after release. Plus, depending on how old it is, it wouldn't have the metasurface, which is a fantastic live tool.

I find P5's interface simpler and easier than Live's so far (I own P5 and have been playing with the Live5 demo for a bit). Live seems to have more advanced features like better audio editing, automation, bussing/routing. P5's included instruments are way better than Live's.
I've had pretty much no problems with the VST wrapper in P5.

Try the free or donationware Tobybear's Minihost (nice add to this is CTAF's MultiFXVST), Seib's VSTHost, PQNAudio VSTSeq, Kreatives' Kristal.

Hi SiriusBliss.
I have used most of the apps mentioned here for the exact purpose you are interested in. Realtime live usage. For stability, flexibility and ease of use, i recommend getting Plogue Bidule as your main host.
http://www.plogue.com/
From here, you can pretty much do whatever you want.
Load VSTs, Rewire applications etc.
I am just starting to use a new VST plug in called Liveslice which allows me to record loops on the fly and manipulate etc. You can find more info on this here:
http://www.livelab.dk/products.php.
ANother must have if you want to rearrange fx and/or layer synths quickly and easily, on the fly is CHainer which you can find here:
http://www.xlutop.com/html/chainer.html
This is a VST host that can also be used as a VST plug within Bidule.
Energy XT can also be used as a VST plug as can Bidule itself. However, for stability and realtime usage at its best, i recommend using Chainer as a host within Bidule. I personally use it as an fx box for synths.
I do have Live and it is a beast. I like it alot but i feel IMO, the modularaity of Bidule makes way for full customisation to your style/technique. A static GUI doesn't allow for custom settings one prefers.
If you REALLY need the session view of Live, just Rewire it to Bidule. I have personally done away with it and am doing fine. I mainly use it to remix.
Bidule i believe is $75, LiveSlice is about $60, Chainer is $60 and u should definitely get Energy XT because it's cheap for what it does and it is getting better and better. I think right now you can get it for under $60.
That's $255 for a MONSTER setup.
Keep in mind though, i'm uncertain about the DX plugs working within this setup. There must be a way i'm sure.

Thanks Former,
This is great feedback.
I've been busy finishing up a session this past week, and still have to get back to checking out the other apps mentioned above as well.
So far audiomulch is NOT really what I'm looking for, although I 'get it' what's possible with it's type of approach.
I do NOT need to do any recording or heavy data management on the backend, so Live is redundant in this regard.
I tend to agree with your statement regarding Live. It's great within it's own paradigm, but still a little to 'bloated' somehow (but it's still great). The session arrangment is nifty, but this approach may not work (but still considering it). Even Project 5 MIGHT be too much, but it's also interesting. EnergyXT crashed on me right off, so I'll have to revisit that later and figure out what I did to blow it up (incompatible vst?). Forte' seems like just a sort of sequencer 'lite' with some token vst and MIDI elements, but may not be functional enough (in initial tests at least) to handle what I'm going to be throwing at whatever software package I arrive at.
This project is somewhat of a leap in paradigms of what's considered real-time composition vs. 'loop factories', vs. MIDI manipulation, etc. I think it's one of those things that when I see it, I will know it.
This approach is pushing my buttons since I've been a guitarist for over 35 years, and am a long-time Samplitude user <hehe>.
Thanks again ya'all for all the recommendations!
