Yes, I did drive the 1176 a bit too much, which is also why the 4:1, 8:1, 12:1 and 20:1 ratios all sounds so similar. Once I'm back at the university I'll cook up some more examples. I'll also drive that male vocal sample trough it.

Any of you guys got good source material you want me to kill? :hihi:

I still need to do some Tubetec LCA-2B examples for you guys but I really need some new material.

Cheers!

The 1176 examples is that a real or fake one?
The only thing you realize about these demos
is the complete absence of low end like if you
would take away everything below 60hz or something...

The percussion track is most obvious when you listen
to the dry and compare to any wet version.

Should the good old 1176 (that I´ve never experienced in real life) really be like that?!

My personal impression is that the 1176 does have a tendancy to pinch the lows, especially if you were going for that trademark 1176 "thwaap" attack sound...it would definately suck the lows in some. Some engineers actually appreciated that quality, because the compression ended up doing what you often did in the heyday of vinyl anyway...which was roll out alot of lows.

Whether the software 1176 emulation displays this particular behavior to a greater or lesser degree I couldn't say.

It would be interesting to hear examples of separate kick & snare with all these compressors. I'd like to hear how the different compressors make the snare "crack" aggressively and the kick "thwack" :) In other words, what kind of sound they produce if you try to achieve a 4/4 floorfiller kick & snare :)

Yes, those examples are from a real 1176, silverface, revision H. If anybody cares to provide me with some kick/snare samples that you want compressed then I'll gladly provide some examples.

Cheers!

By the way, did you guys check out Wm's single hit drums? There's a .zip file that you can download which has a lot of single hit drums ran trough various compressors.

Cheers!

"achieve a 4/4 floorfiller kick & snare"

Ah,

4/4 is a style? I make 4/4 most of the time, too. If it is metal, hardcore, techno, trance, pop, ambient, etc. it's mostly in 4/4. That settles it. I make 4/4!

why dont you do some examples (at least for software ones)? seeing as you know what you want.

(because he's Ejo, and he does that in every thread, the odd fella he is)

and just a thought, although it's not strictly compression, a real crunched reel to reel sound would do just fine in this thread. Don't suppose you've got an example handy with that drum loop of yours?
