Great analogy. And I say that as a Christian. Saw NARNIA today, and I couldn't help but think that a few more years of the "Religious Right," and America will feel a lot like Narnia under the White Witch... which, of course, would be terribly ironic, given what the White Witch represents.

manifest destiny actually has a highly religious connotation... i don't think it's an alternative approach at all.

sure, but historically its been used to unite peoples of various social, ethnic and religious backgrounds for the common cause of US imperialism. while having religious connotations, its often described as being non-denominational (afterall, no REAL American doesn't believe in God), therefore can be made equally appealing to Catholics, Jews, Protestants, Mormons, Muslims and Scientologists.

Though Manifest Destiny probably descends from the Puritans' notion of creating the "New Jerusalem" in America, Manifest Destiny itself is - as intel mentioned - a notion that is accessible to people regardless of religion. It is a secularized form of messianic imperialism. And in actuality, the imperialistic impulse behind Manifest Destiny long predates any form of Christianity.
