Is latency an issue with grooves?

Well, I maybe discovered something today. For an unknown reason, the latency of my soundcard was set to 36 ms and I did a pretty groovy tune made of Kompakt for the drums and the other tracks with audio or audio clips (like ...claps)
When coming back to 10ms, the clap audio clip and the drums from kompakt sound really in sync but I think I lost 50% of the groove (together with the other sounds like bass and such...)
There's less life in the song (loops)...
Could it be the result of latency change?? I thought that latency was an issue while recording, not when playing...

BTW, delaying the kompakt midi clip of 25ms seems to regive some groove to the thing...
It's crazy. Could you explain that to me? I heard of latency compensation. Maybe I'm at it.

as long as your asio device is happy running at 10ms there should be no problem AFAIK
i dont get any noticbale chainge intill i push the buffer so low that all i here is distortaion
the loss of life discription makes me think that your card just is not happy running at 10ms
have you tested other equally cpu active tracks with the 2 different settings? also what is your sound card (if you dont mind me asking)

No, this shouldn't be the case.oxbee wrote:Well, I maybe discovered something today. For an unknown reason, the latency of my soundcard was set to 36 ms and I did a pretty groovy tune made of Kompakt for the drums and the other tracks with audio or audio clips (like ...claps)

The only thing I can think of is that some plugs don't work well with super high latencies but I don't know of anything specific with your plugs.
In any case I would suggest you set the latency at 10ms and don't change it anymore unless there is a reason for it.

In fact using 10ms is ok but it's too much "clean". Too much straight. I have created this tune with a latency of 36ms which is too large for normal use but I did. (I really don't know why it has changed)
So, after noticing this value, I decided to go back to 10ms and now my song seems to have lost life because I think sounds from the VSTi (Kompakt) and audio clips are in perfect sync.
I would really like to have explanation on this because it means that the grooves in all my songs are linked to the latency...
Does it makes sense?

not really.oxbee wrote:because it means that the grooves in all my songs are linked to the latency...

unless of course you are using rack filters in which case some tracks may be as much as 64ms out of time with others.
Some MIDI plugins such as arps and humanisers may swing more (or just simply be way out of time) with higher latencies, but generally it shouldn;t make any difference.

thanks for your answers:
Madness: It's exactly what I did previously and I have recovered the "groove". It's crazy.
It appears that I learnt something really new yesterday 8p.

There is a known limitation where PDC does not work when using it on plugins with multi-outs. Are you putting the outs from Kompakt through anything else?oxbee wrote:no. but Kompakt is in a rack for multiple outputs purpose.

Yeah mate, glad you sorted it!!oxbee wrote:thanks for your answers:

I personally feel the Latency Settings and how the Delay compensation actually works needs more attention in the documentation. Comming from a Neewb angle there really is no hope gettin' your head around it, and due to the fact that T2 doesn't handle external midi well and there are still delay comp issues, it really would help new peeps like me trying to get their songs sound tight when they start sounding wack for no reason at all.
I've stuffed with my settings umpteen times on midi in\out audio ect., and I still feel confussed and like I just spent 5hrs testing something that should be all together easier to setup and understand, a short tutorial in the manual explaining the issues would be very nice.

I think that too. It's not clear at all and now that I am sure it IS an issue, I'll go deeper through this to understand.
well, I am sure latency has affected the sync between Kompakt and audio. I've recorded the bus output and compared the results with different latency values. It sounds like the beat is delayed.
Jplanet: Kompakt is alone in the rack, but I have some serial filters (Mackie Comp, Kjaerhus GEQ-7) on the individual tracks. Mostly drums (kick, snare, hhat).
