hello all,
just wondering if anyone knows of a free ftp program for mac? i used to use smart ftp for windows but i don't think they do a mac version. i don't really know all that much about web stuff - especially mac web stuff so any info would be much appreciated.
cheers,
bov

I'm no expert, but for everything I do I don't need ftp software. you can do most of it just from the finder. if go to the "go" menu and select "connect to server", or just hit cmd-k in the finder, you will get a box that you put the address in. the site will come up like a hard drive and you browse it just like any other finder window.

I don't if that's what you needed, but that's why I haven't bother with any ftp software since os9

Don't use finder for ftp... it sucks really bad. Aside from the fact that it takes for-freaking-ever to connect to any host, it doesn't support resuming...

Cyberduck is what you seek... it can do sftp, ftp, (among other protocols), and is free.

thanks for the quick replies. now that i've got that sorted out i've realised that i've also lost my ftp login details - doh!

Well, for starters, it actually works. The finder ftp client always seems to time out for me, and when it does actually manage to connect, it chokes really badly when browsing large directories and fails during transfers.

Cyberduck can also do sftp as well as ftp over ssh2, and it supports upload/download resuming, assuming that the server can jive like that. While these are the two features that jump out at me right away, you can find a more complete feature list here and decide for yourself.

yeah I always find the usage of the term "PC" to be odd. a Mac is a PC, so is a Linux box and a hundred other things. why don't people say "Windows box"? are they ashamed? ;-)

Please tell me you can build ncftp on a mac.

(edit) yes, this is the best ftp client, hands down, for any platform:

I think the issue is exactly the same on Windows. Finder is good for networking some computers and doing remote activities like this but for ftp i'd rather use something dedicated to that chore.

Same thing on windows, the OS is fine for networking but whenever I try to use it as a FTP client it just sucks.
