Doesn't take much to confuse me. Maybe that's the problem ;)

Anyways, been a long time since I've been here. Haven't had time to produce in a very long time :(

Edit: I seem to have lost all of my post count since I was last here. I guess that's what happens when you used to post back in 2002 and the forum goes through upgrades

My question isn't about production, per se, but I am trying to do something with tools that everyone here would be familiar with.

All that I want to do is realtime processing. Basically, all we're talking about is running whatever my computer is producing through some plugins, and then out to my amps.

Here's the idea:

And the full wiring diagram:

Note: I don't need audiophile grade sound quality. I just want to do some sound processing in my car, with a much more affordable sound card.

Apparently, you need a sound card that can do "internal routing", and this is only possible with a handful of really highend cards, or else you cannot take standard WDM output and re-route it as input for your ASIO software.

Is there absolutely no way that this can be done?

When I think of all the crazy things we do with samplers and synths, I can't comprehend how this cannot be done.

All that I want to do is process sound that is being "generated" by another Windows app, and apply some FX before it reaches the output.

Is there another way? Is Console the issue?

Thanks very much!

ESI's Juli@ has rewire, and I don't consider that a high-end card (good, but a diffrent league than RME)

Maybe this will help you: http://www.ntonyx.com/vac.htm

A virtual audio cable will do the routing for you ;-)

Thank you so much for the response. That is exactly what I'm looking for!

I'm playing with it right now and am very excited ;)

One concern I have is that, from within Console, I have to specify my audio device. I can chose between ASIO, DirectSound, and MME.

Now, if I chose DirectSound or MME, it works fine. I can specify the virtual cable as my Wave In device, and my MAudio soundcard as the output.

If I select ASIO, then I cannot use the virtual cable as input.

I plan on running several CPU intensive plugins. Will this pose a problem? Is there any way to use the ASIO drivers?

Thanks again!

Maybe the VAC doesn't have ASIO implemented? Dunno... One limitation of ASIO is that only one program can access a device at any time.

You have it working, and I don't see any real issues with not using ASIO. Maybe the latency is somewhat raised, but you can't have it all.

It seems probable that that ASIO limitation is the reason why VAC doesn't have an ASIO implementation.

I was under the impression that CPU usage was increased when not using ASIO. ASIO is just an interface though, so that doesn't really make much sense. But now I remember why I had that impression... Say you aren't using ASIO drivers, and try and produce. If you don't set your buffer length really large, then CPU usage goes through the roof.

For this application, it seems to me like latency is not an issue at all, because the wet signal (after running through the plugins that are doing the EQ, digital room correction, and time alignment), is not mixed with the dry signal.

Is this all correct?

If so, I'm a happy man ;)
