This little topic made me retest the Waves plugins, I just installed the Waves Diamond Bundle demo ... and must say that I've forgotten what I loved about a lot of these plugins now ...

RComp - tried it on vocals, made my vocals sound boxy, put the marquis on em and my vocals melted beautifully, nice !

RVerb - Still can't move away from impulses of the Lex 960, (kisses Pristine Space Light) ... the tails on the RVerb are way worse than I remember em.

REQ - boosting the high end is very sweet with this EQ, but boosting the mids is realllllyyy harsh, I'd definitely choose the GEQ over this one for boosting and cutting in fact but if you want a clean, noticeable cut, the REQ is quite nice.

Rde-esser - Still da bomb, man I wish I could find a good de-esser to replace this one ....

C1 / Q eqs, dislike these, they just don't sound all that good to me ...

RVox ... - i still prefer marquis

L2 Limiter - ouch ... does this thing distort easily or what ... back to Elephant where things sound cleaner.

C4 / Enigma / Doppler / Mastering Multiband - still awesome, haven't been replaced just yet

Obviously, these plugins are industry standard and all, but wow, I'm really starting to get accustomed to a smoother sound with Kjaerhus and Voxengo ... that could just be a personal thing ... who knows .... I find that the GEQ by Kjaerhus is soo warm and pretty on so many things, it has this beautiful mellow tone, very much like a pultec and just sounds so musical and natural ... GlissEQ does my shelving filter work and troublesome EQ (dynamic nature helps in this regard).

that'll be the L1 on the output, there are free equivilents.

the highs on that eq are like shattering glass, try hydratone or harmonieq.

but generally, old waves plugs pale into insignificance against the likes of voxengo, imo :P

although im still having trouble replacing Rverb, as AA doesnt suit my taste, and true stereo impluse configurations are so cpu hungry.

i like the Rverb plugin on vocals, and i like the trueverb plugin for anything mic'ed a little distant. other than that, really, the L3 multimaxizer is the only thing i've ever really been interested in, and that's only for mastering. i prefer the sound of t-racks for an in-track compressor/limiter. that being said, i do rock music moreso than anything else, and not the electro/fusion stuff most people around here make.

Rock music is my forte too, but at work I do about 90% electronic, so I like to have tools for a well-rounded repetoire. I find, come to think of it, that I tend to pull out the Waves stuff immediately for Rock production, while the more modern, affordable alternatives get used for electronic stuff. Kind of makes sense if I've already recorded instruments/vocals with analog gear/processing and Waves' bite comes in nicely; and the electronic stuff really benefits from the artifical warming of the VST plugins. I think the only Waves plug that comes up during electronic stuff these days is RenBass (love).

Interesting. I hadn't noticed that before.

Most of the Waves bundles now come with Tune LT and IRL (well, not just IRL, but all the IRs which is really the important part). I haven't tried Tune LT yet as I already have AutoTune, but for those without it, this might be a good deal. As for IRL, there seem to be a lot of convolution verbs out now, but not that many nice IRs that come with them. That's really where the IR reverb has an advantage. Anyone try that Wizoo verb yet?

Post

I have, it sounds absolutely incredible !! Wizooverb for me, is the absolute best native reverb available. It truly sounds like a high end hardware reverb and I would put it in the same league as Lexicons and TCs.

On the downside, the CPU usage is pretty bad which makes it almost unuseable for big projects :D
