With sonar and logic express, when you freeze a track you can still adjust the pan and volume. with tracktion it seems like since pan and volume are considered a plugin that they are frozen also? Is there a work around other then rendering the track?

If there is not a work around, this would be a very important feature for me in the next release of tracktion.

This is partly why I don't use freeze.

Render (or export) the track instead and then import it to another track. Now you will have a wave (Which is what freeze is) and you will be able to use pan and volume.

Keep the original unrendered version so you can make changes if you want.

Basically, freeze is just a marketing gimmick.

Yeah,
This is exactly what I do to. Especially working with alot of NI stuff. If I got a Reacktor or 2, B2, Guitar Rig, and another. it really eats up ALOT of my cpu. I found that if I mute the channel that the cpu hog is in, it wont take up the cpu power. So render out, and bring it back into the same session.

thank you both for the great advice. that solves my problem. it makes a lot of sense......that's why i didn't think of it.

Just wondering... can you route a frozen track to another track and use it's volume and pan? Maybe you can't route frozen tracks either?

you can't do anything with frozen tracks. All changes require you to unfreeze and refreeze.

Just to chime in here. The Tracktion freeze really is intended to truly reducing disk read and CPU caused by too many tracks and/or too many plug-ins. The freeze renders all frozen tracks to a single stereo audio file so freezing 5 tracks or 5000 tracks will result in the same amount of disk activity and CPU after the freeze is complete. This is obviously not very flexible but it does allow almost any machine to work on a really complex mix. If you need more flexibility, rendering tracks is what you need to use.

Having said all that, improving freeze is on the radar and we realize that adding flexibility to process the frozen files would be helpfull to many people.

Yeah, I'm comfortable with rendering tracks, and I like the flexability that it offers, but there's one thing I dont like about it.

Say for example I have my master track that I render from. I name it "stuff". I put "stuff" on a track. Then I want to update "stuff". So I go back to the master and try to render it out as the same name of "stuff". T wont let me. I have to render to "stuff2" delete the old "stuff" and bring in the new "stuff2". Even if I delete "stuff" from the track before before I render to another "stuff", it wont let me. It would be nice if I could render and replace with the push of one button.

The way I see it, there would ideally be three kinds of freeze:

1) Freeze Instrument. This would freeze just the instrument plugin, leaving effects open to further changes.

2) Freeze Track. Freezes a track as itself, so that when you unfreeze it, you don't have to rerender the (many) other tracks you've frozen.

And lastly,

3) Freeze Together. What we have now.

I think these three would cover most of what people would need, and the ability to free up CPU as it becomes neccesary, rather than going to extremes right away, would be nice.

i agree with all 3 of thease but would like to add a 4'th

freeze clips, then if you freeze a loop you can still move the frozen clip about & copy & paste it aswell

Totally agree, that would be awsome, and so intuitive to work with. Great Idea dude:)
