how do I select part of an audio clip in Tracktion

you have to cut the part you want then just mouse click

the venerable '/' key is your friend if you want to cut apart an audio clip and just manipulate/delete/move/amplify/save that part.
Move the cursor either with the mouse or by typing in the time value in the lower right transport window for the start of the section, then hit '/'. Notice how it split the clip into two? Then, go to the end of the section of the clip you want to highlight for editing/cutting/whatever, and do the same thing.
If you just want to do something to that section, you need to click on the top bar of the clip to select it.

It also is helpful to print out the Key Mappings list and study that - very instructive.
Once you try the clip splitting a few times, it becomes second nature.
