Simple and easy on CPU, I use that for cuts on tracks alot.

Posihfopit is amazing for a freebie, I'd try that before buying anything, It's my first choice for most tasks especially boosting.

PLParEQ words dont do it justice its really that good, best free mix/master EQ ever.

I think EQ is one area where Freeware is clearly on par with commercial stuff, Ive only named the 3 i use but they seem to cover all my needs at the moment.

You can't beat this combination for all of your equalizing needs--Equium and Firium from Elemental Audio. I also have PSP Master Q but find the GUI frustrating, and the Eq does not give stereo in Live 5.
If you want to get a good eq on sale (through the end of today), Voxengo has Gliss EQ for like $50. You have some nice freebies listed above.

Just out of interest, nobody mentioned the Waves stuff. Is that down to price, quality or both?

Post

Waves are pretty light on CPU for what they sound like, but i think price and their copy protection dont do them any favours.

there's lots of talk on here about the different qualities of EQs and phasing artefacts etc. Has anyone done an objective test with demonstrable differences? I'm sure there are differences, I just wonder how many of them are a matter of perception...

I use many different EQ (depending on the material) but one that I use on nearly every project is Voxengo HarmoniEQ

Well i use IzotopeOzone3 eq, its very very good, I also use Waves RTrack eq and I like the Voxengo EQ on Voxformer but its very limited.

Without a doubt IzotopeEQ is the most used piece of kit that I have period.

You don't need any test.
Just try a few different ones.
You will hear the difference immediately.
For example try the big warm ValveTone62
http://www.tritonedigital.com/valvetone.htm
A lot of unique character, nothing will sound quite the same.

My Favs:

Correction: Posihfopit, and looking forward to acquiring GlissEQ
Colouring: HarmoniEQ and NyquistEQ (5-band)
Mastering: CurveEq

The PLParEq3 shows promise, but I haven't worked it much as of yet.

Cubase's native Q isn't bad either.

You tend not to be able to instantiate an outboard EQ more than once... Of course it's good to have different 'flavours' to add variety to a mix so it might make a nice addition, but you'd need to burn the EQ into each treated track which is a faff unless you have a patchbay or something.
waves q-clone. done. :)

Hydratone here
And I try to avoid surgical EQing as no EQ can really do it for me.

Try WWAYM NWEQ (free). It only excells at a mid bass up to 1k subtle boost, but I use it a lot for that. Can bring boring instruments to life.

I like GEQ-7 for cuts that retain an instrument's character, but the boosts sound artificial to me.

Sonalksis excells in bass boosts, I really dislike the edgy highs it has, though.

Posihfopit (free if you're poor like me) and ElectriQ (payware version, if you can afford it) are nice general purpose EQ's with subtle high boosts and general soft analog character.

Equium is a nice general purpose EQ.

I have Tritone Valvetone '62 and will start using it when they release the 96k version. It is a one trick pony but is very warm. Hydratone has a lot of character but I find sometimes it is so far from transparent as to be not of much use to me so I didn't buy it.

Of course Refined Audiometrics is a superior outfit, but they are very high end. Their 3 band is no longer available as of tomorrow, but if they ever offer a scaled down pay version EQ, take a serious look at it.
Here is my small version:
