I'm surprised no one thinks of there computer as an instrument :o

I play guitar and bass very mediocrely(is that even a word?) but well enough to get my ideas across. Only played them for about 4 years now.
took piano lessons as a kid, and picked it back up about 5 years ago, and again, only play well enough to get my ideas across.(though starting to gain some left hand dexterity finally).

I am buying a drum kit in a few months so I can be a mediocre drummer too :)

I figure I will never be great at any one instrument, so its better to be average at all of them. My creative output tapered off when I was trying to pick up guitar and bass, and its only just now finding its way back after a 2 year drought. but at least I have 3 instruments to write on as opposed to barely one.

I do what it takes to have new ideas and new songs to play my guitar to...

We ALL think of our computer as an instrument, but for the most part you need to be able to play a controller of some form (be it keys, pads, strings or what have you) to get the most out of it- hence the references to traditional instruments.

The scorpions explained too me who I was years ago

I was born from the sound of the strings
For someone to give everything
To be a song just for your feeling

Close your eyes and I’ll try to get in
To waken your heart like the sping
’cause I was born to touch your feelings

Steal the time, take a song and be glad
Be free as the birds, don’t be sad
Your time will come, I’ll make you feel it
You’re still young like the sun after rain
Follow the light it’s not in vain
And you will see I’ll touch your feelings

and really folks that sums it up....I do what it takes to play my guitar, as long as it's honest..

Well, I think computers are one more of the creators of the music. They couldn't do our music without us, but we can't do our music without them, so they are part of the team.

Google wrote:A musical instrument is a device that has been constructed or modified with the purpose of making music. In principle, anything that produces sound, and can somehow be controlled by a musician, can serve as a musical instrument; but the expression is reserved generally to items that have that specific purpose
sounds too me that makes a computer an instrument...

To me it sort of is, and sort of isn't. In a way I think of it as an orchestra, though I don't do orchestral things with it per se. For that I blame the music theory and conducting classes I took years ago when I was going to Florida West Coast Youth Orchestra stuff on Saturdays.

Conversely, when I read Kim Stanley Robinson's The Memory of Whiteness -- a bizarre sci-fi book about a mechanical player-piano like "orchestra" on tour -- I thought "that's not an orchestra, that's an electroacoustic sytnhesizer." :D
