Arturia tried this immediately after the launch of the Moog Modular V. In a survey they made, this was the most sought after old synth to emulate.
Unfortunately, Gibson, which has the rights on it, refused to establish any agreement, and even menaced to sue them if the even try to do it in any kind of disguised way.
Considering the aggressivness of Gibson, thes menaces had to be taken seriously, so, they withdraw that idea, and turned into the CS80, the second most voted.
BTW - Regarding Yamaha, SC and Korg. Yamaha owns Korg and that's why SC belongs to yamaha (as Korg does), and since Arturia is becoming more and more closer to Yamaha these days, naturally this came out as a good deal.
EMS still is an independet company, and nobody could emulate a Synthi A without their prior consent.

You never know, Gibson might finally come to their senses, sack their chairman and try to build some level of respect that they once had. Gibson have had such a destructive effect on anything they touch. The only people that have benefitted over the years from this approach are Gibson's lawyers...

Does Richard Brooks know about that?

Jerry Kovarsky that works for Korg USA addressed this urban legend about a year ago. He posts infrequently here, I first ran into him on the Clonewheel board.

If I can find it, I'll post the "real story". Edit: found it, http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... c&start=93

Maybe it's not the case now, but I remember being told that Korg had access to SCI technologies and engineeers because of the association with Yamaha (Wavestation and SY22/33 came along almost at the same time). And in the link you provided Kovarsky admit that Yamaha was an important share holder of Korg once. Anyway, that doesn't matter now. The case is we may have a new kind of VSTi that's a hybrid of a P5 and VS. Personally, I welcome it, though I still miss both the VCS3/Synthi A and/or Xpander/Matrix 12

Ain't nothing like some armchair analyst's conclusions, mixed with some quickly adopted terms...

Congratulations for utilizing the fanboy term though.

Now, you might do something surprising and for example read up on about how people generally feel about NI's Pro5x for example. A dose of reality sometimes serves a purpose - assuming that one is up to the task of absorbing some information.

LOL, falling of my analyst's armchair.

sorry, did not know fanboy was patented by you - yes, I think I have it from around here, so I thought it might not be a bad idea to use it. Did not want to steal something from you. Or do you just feel uncovered?
Anyways - I read a lot on how people feel about the Pro5x and I tested it, alone and in dialog with others. So I took my dose of reality somehow.

I do think for a VA it sounds rather digital and is lacking liveliness. And that for the emulation of a analog synth. He, stop, you are right, I did never play a real Prophet 5, just have a T8, and know a couple of other analogs (also some other emulations of Prophets) - and they do not sound like they are already dead for quite some time. The expression "dead on" becomes somehow a neww meaning speaking about Pro5x.

Hehe, looking forward to your answer, somehow you seem to be a person with a funny sense of humor. That is always fun.

All the best

If you want a perfect Sequential Prophet 5 emulation, get a Yamaha SW1000XG pre-owned on eBay and stick a Yamaha PLG150AN into it - or buy a Yamaha AN200 fart box.

Not only did Yamaha buy the IP and assets of Sequential when it went to the wall, they developed and tuned the PLG150AN repeatedly until neither the original Sequential engineeers nor the most famous musos using the P5 nor anybody else could reliably tell which was which in blind comparison tests.

Given that the PLG150AN is a Sondius model (and it is), nobody is going to get closer until the patents run out.

Perhaps you should have then paid more attention to what I was saying, instead of trying to be witty?

The word 'fanboy' is usually - as is the case with you - thrown around as a mediocre excuse for grounding one's opinions, counterweighing them against differing positive opinions from others. And just like you did, it's just tossed around with any regard as to whether the opposite side actually matches the vague description.

A good hint though... poke around here, see when it started becoming popular. It at least used to mention something. Then, read on and see how folks here have generally felt about Pro-5x. Then come back and tell me how many Pro-5x fanboys you found, compared to how many people have stated something akin to "it's nice, but it's not exactly a convincing emulation". I guess some of us remember at least those times when Pro-52 and later on -53 appeared, and how they were received.

I never claimed anything regarding the quality of its emulation, nor that you've never played with the real thing. Quite the contary, I chose not to go there since besides being irrelevant to what I said, I did read what you wrote about your T8 (congratulations by the way, that's an impressive piece of gear).

I was merely pointing out that there was very little logic, if any, behind your comments (both the reasons why Pro-5x is such a mediocre attempt and there's no attempt to improve it since it sells anyways) and about the "NI fanboys".

Food for thought. Points for staying civil, though - that's another thing that's getting scarce around here.

HanafiH AN1X / AN200 / PLG150AN are a "Sondius model"? Sondius basically applies to their line of physical modeling synth products, which means the VL series, PLG100/150 boards and a few of them odd software products. AN1X (ok, the obligatory AFAIR) has nothing to do with Sondius and what it covers. Going through some Yamaha documentation from several years ago, apart from the Sondius-XG sidetrack, Sondius only seems to get mentioned in relation to the aforementioned products.

There is an entire strand of physical modelling dedicated to emulation of analog devices. That's why Yamaha has 'analog physical modeling' in its VA's. Exactly what that means, Yamaha won't say, which suggests they have an original algorithm.

Sondius is the name of the patents. Sondius-XG is the name of a branded implementation. The VA oscillators on the MOSS board (and very good they are too) are built using these techniques. Knowing Yamaha, these will never see a native implementation until Yamaha has unbreakable copy protection.

And, in passing, fanboy is a term properly applied to people who hysterically and compulsively defend Cubase in ignorance of the facts.

All comes back to Yamaha, don't it?

This Sound On Sound article on the history of Korg covers the Yamaha and SCI relationships.

Basically, Korg (Keio Electronic) had a long working history with Yamaha dating back to the 1960s. Each company made compenents for the other. Yamaha had a small stake in Korg/Keio for a long time.

1987 - Yamaha bought a controlling interesting in Korg with the agreement that both remained separate entities and could develop competing products. Korg used more Yamaha parts in its synths and keyboards.

1988 - SCI is bought by Yamaha. Yamaha establishes DSD Inc. as an R&D division with Dave Smith. This produces the SY22 vector synth.

1989 - After a year Yamaha decides to shut DSD down. Tsutomu Katoh - Korg's main man - with word of this shutdown, hires Dave Smith and friends to start Korg's R&D in Silicon Valley. Thus, the Wavestation was born.

1993 - With the money from the M1 and Wavestation lines Katoh buys out the majority of Yamaha's share in Korg.

Over the years I have come to appreciate NI's Pro53 more and more. I don't need every synth to be all-inclusive. Sometimes I just want a decent sound and low CPU for making music. Sure, there are plenty of others synths that do the same thing as Pro53, but most are not nearly as efficient and very few synths do the sync sound as well as Pro53.

All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

That does indeed pretty much define what it at least used to mean, if one replaces Steinborg with "any product".

But for the majority, it's a new buzzword to throw around to make one feel a part of the community... so it's pretty much forbidden to mention publically that one likes a certain product - you're either a fanboy or a member of a self-appointed golden eared brigade conspiracy :P

But at least the entertainment value goes up exponentially.
