you have to remember, this guy is selling his name, not his music.

Welcome to the corporate world.
amen, just imagine the sheer number of meetings that will occur after Fripp's done recording to try & decide which 10 second blip to send to management for approval.
I'm amazed that I haven't lost my mind during some of the TV commercials that I've worked. If you've never been through this corporate bullshit before, you have absolutley no f**king idea how insane it can be.

Just imagine being in a room with 8 people. All of equal importance and say in the matter. None of them have a clue what they want. None of them have a clue what they are talking about but need to pretend that they do so that they can keep their cush jobs. They can never agree with each other on any single detail. They obsess on shit that will never be noticed. And they can never come to any decisions. And it's your job to do some sort of work that will please them. Usually they have you going in circles over and over again doing minor variations on the same thing but more often then not... just the same things over and over again 'till it's overworked and watered down. The only thing that saves your sanity is the deadline which brings it all to a merciful end.

It's amazing that anything ever gets done in this climate. If it wasn't for arbitrary deadlines, I assume that it just plain wouldn't.

Favourite genius quote of the vid:
Microsoft employee: "So what key *is* blue and green?"

All the Microsoft people just stand around looking clueless for the whole session.

I love Fripps soundscapes though, very nice indeed.

Like I said... welcome to the corporate world. :hihi:

I thought the video, or at least the 15 minutes I saw before the streaming messed up, was interesting. I'd like to see how he was doing that. Was there a midi controller on his guitar? What was he using for the looping?

and it's been his way for such a very long times .. :(

I do work in a 'media' industry, where there is pressure to conform to arbitrary standards that causes so much stress, it's impossible to keep the exceptional.

Yes a MIDI pickup hitting some synths, a pair of Eventide H3000's and he's using two Eventide H8000's for the loops.

So the sound of Windows Vista is new age synthscape guitar loop ambience, wale song inspired, "human", "confident", and mostly green and blue?

I can't wait. :hihi:

So I'm having a hard time envisioning the context, here. Are we going to hear a snippet of Robert Fripp's synth guitar wale song loop every time we click Administrative Tools or Recycle Bin?

I love the guy Microsoft has hovering over Fripp giving him concept cues. "Okay Robert, now let's hear a five minute loop that expresses a quiet yet firmly resolved six month surge in Microsoft stock..."

Well, at least it was good to see Robert Fripp in a live setting, regardless of the bogosity of the venue. I'm one of those people who has listened to him since the 1960's but has never been able to see him in concert.

As with XP, I will have all of the built-in sounds turned off, though.

OBApocrypha: When Microsoft approached Mick Jagger for the rights to use Start Me Up in the Win 95 advertising campaign, Jagger had no idea how much to ask for...so he asked for US$12 Million. Microsoft didn't even blink and wrote the check.

OBEdit: Any of us on KvR could have done this gig in our sleep. "Blue and Green" my ass.
We shall see orchestral machines with a thousand new sounds, with thousands of new euphonies, as opposed to the present day's simple sounds of strings, brass, and woodwinds. -- George Antheil, circa 1925 ---
