Good thing you didn't buy Sonar 5, because it would have become a $900 program (three machines).

And I bet you love Microsoft too, seeing as how you have to have a legal license on those three machines.

Oxymoron

Just curious, how many machine I.D number changes have you had, Ive reformatted several times in the past year, and am wondering if the next reformat, new hardrive, or new computer will result in a dead Tracktion.

I also run Cakewalk and Adobe audition, but there're never a problem, I just type in my registration numbers on reinstall and there're good to go, no reactivation needed.

I feel like a cat having used up 8 of my 9 lves at this point

I know this isn't the FOR SALE section - but sounds like there might be some interest in another T2 license? I recently went all Cakewalk (SONAR, P5, DIMENSION PRO) and I'm looking to unload my T2 (boxed version).

I can transfer my account by sending you my login so that you can change the user data. And I will send you the manual, box, etc with the third party RMIV, SampleTank etc stuff.

Make me an offer...

Hi rivrock,

I don't recall the exact number of Machine ID changes since November 2004, maybe nine or ten times? Possibly a few more.

After starting this thread, I noticed that the my.mackie.com site does tell you that MachineID changes will stop working after a while. I'm sure it was there before, but I just did not read it. So there is advance notice...

In '03, if I recall correctly, getting a new keyfile meant writing to Jules. The automated system does work better, but the finite number of changes before lockout seems arbitrary and capricious if there is no way (other than Beno's good will -- thanks again, Beno!) to reset or allow furher changes.

Perhaps they would reset it if they take a look at the IP tracking info (which I hope they keep)of all those who access a registered account. It's not conclusive, but it could help them determine whether a user ignorantly locked himself out or whether he has given login details to friends or posted it on a forum.

@hexman, I haven't read the licence agreement, but wouldn't think it allows you to transfer a licence to a third party. I.e., I don't think the licenses are independent like that. Could be wrong though.

Cheers everyone.

I think a "changes per timeframe" (eg. 10 changes per year) would be easier than having to request a manual reset.

Or, a "time between" tracker. Let's say you have 10 chances to re-install to start with. You upgrade hardware and download a new key. The 6-month (or whatever) timer starts. You're down to 9 changes. You decide a week later that you want a new stick of RAM and get a new machine ID. The "6-month timer" restarts, but now you're down to 8. A month later you get a new laptop, so your second machine gets a new ID. The "6-month timer" restarts, but you're down to 7. The hard drive you had installed was faulty, so you took it in to be replaced and they offered you a non-identical model as a substitute. You install it, get a new machine ID. The "6-month timer" restarts, but you're down to 6.

BUT... things fly by without needing a new machine ID for 6-months. The timer says "OK, time to reset the account" and you now have 10 again.

Of course, the numbers chosen are completely arbitrary. I would think it should be less in order to cut down on piracy, as it would be uncommon to have that many machine ID changes. And for the people who DO end up reaching the max, at that point in time they should be able to contact Mackie.

You can install Cubase on several computers, but as it is locked by a key, you can only use one at a time.

Mostly, I would like a counter which tells me how many are left on the mackie site so the user is not surprised when there are suddenly no more.

Or how about, knowing how many you get before you purchase the product.

More pertinently, how about this;

Hands up anyone who knows someone who's bought tracktion and they've ran into a situation where they couldn't use it cos their machine id changed too often, and mackie tech support didn't sort it out, either through the forum or the phone line?

Anyone? No?
"my gosh it's a friggin hardware"

You won't find many, I'm betting.
