I think that "warmers" (digital) should be used sparingly....at least that's what I've found anyway. Real tubes probably give you that something extra but I don't really need the minimal extra benefits and expense of real tubes. That whole "too much of a good thing" stayed with me growing up I guess...I', ok with Magneto. VW does sound nice though.....

U sure? I can load Magneto in the Wavelab demo I got with SX. It doesn't let you save rendered projects, so maybe that's where any limitations might be, but I actually doubt that.

Wavelab will accept Magneto...I used it the other day....I think Magneto used to be sold in a bundle of Mastering software so there is no reason it wouldn't work in another Steinberg product...

Deosnt work for me I have WL 5 and SX2, perhaps with newer versions, it is available to other hosts.

I thought Magneto used to be generally available? Seems to be only Cubase nowadays though.

I've started using it more and more instead of a standard compressor for some channels. I really don't like it over a whole mix, but it can be good for tracking. Seems to work well on guitar type sounds, drums (depending on the style of drums you're after) and others.

I've only ever played with the demo of VW, but first impressions of it...I thought it was a touch too farty...probably I just didn't play with it long enough - because I know Mixsat is capable of some lovely sounds. Mixsat on drums with high valve settings and followed by a LPF to cut the nasty high stuff is great - and the tapesat modes are good too.

Personally I'm not fond of any digital "warmer" over a full mix, although I use several within mixes on channels or even groups.

The thing I like more about Magneto is that it doesn't seem to add nasty harsh highs. Not sure what type of harmonics (if any) it uses, but I imagine they only use a small amount of 1st order harmonics, maybe up to 2nd. Some of the other valve sims can get very harsh if you use anything less than minimal amounts. On the whole, I prefer s/w tapesats to s/w valves.

Magneto's now quite old, as plugins go, but I think it holds its head up against the competition - not as flexible as VW of course.

It's discontinued. The good news is: if you're a Cubase user, you have Magneto (nifty new interface since SX 2), and if you can find it in a store, it'll be dirt cheap.

Magneto's a great little plug-in. Vintage Warmer takes it to a higher level, but it's still worthwhile, especially for free.

Sorry, I guess that was unclear. I was trying to say that VW, IMHO, is a more advanced warmer than Magneto, but Magneto still does a great job; and Magneto is free for Cubase-users.

from those tuby digital vst plugs I think Antares Tube is the best one. Distinct and plugin-thinking deep sound. But imho better get a couple of cheap (if can't afford pricey ones) tube analog boxes - colours are all there.

I disagreee I have ANtares tube and that can only be used in real moderation if you want subtle warming other wise it is really a disortion device in my opinion, ALthough I do like it for what it is..

Antares Tube sounds great, no doubt, but I do appreciate the extra level of control in Magneto and VM.
