i know squat about the internal workings of these things so it may be a real dumb suggestion,

BUT:

seeing as their are so many ways of editing MIDI data (never please all of the people etc. etc.) couldn't something like Yamahas OPT standard be included? Then you could just use your favourite plugin editor as you wished.

Goes against the general design ethos though I guess ('nuther window...)

There's a plan to build a open source sequencer that is based around the yamaha OPT spec. Crimson Warlock is leading it. It's an interesting idea.

I don't think it is that applicabale to Tracktion though, or even maybeall that beneficial. I'm not sure that it would be possible to keep the 'edit in place' kind of working system that Tracktion offers with an OPT drop in MIDI editor. t isn't the 'internal workings' bit that is the problem so much as the external 'how it all comes together' aspect. A plugin MIDI canvas would automatically reduce some of the tightly integrated nature of the host.

I'm surprised that more hasn't been done with OPT though.

FilthyK wrote:That too! My point about being able to work in Fruity is this... when you bring up Piano Roll, it has these big blocks to work with by default. I say zoom in on 2 or 3 octaves by default.
that feature is sitting right under your nose my friend...

click 'options' then 'default midi editor vertical scale' and then select your defualt piano roll scale from 2 octaves, 4 octaves, 6 octaves or the full scale.. it's been a feature for a while now. I keep mine on 2 octaves cause I like big blocks too... hope that helps.. :D

...and that should be FAQ'd. :)

I believe I had seen the names of pads on the keys at the left side of the piano-roll a while back when I was using RMIII in Tracktion...it's extremely cool and useful. But I can't make it happen again. Anyone knows how to enable this feature? Or was I drinking too much or something?

Post

Pad names should appear if you zoom in (vertically) far enough that there's enough room to draw the text.

Ah, I see, many thanks! :)

...another question...how to change the current scale? (not the default scale setting) :help:

I didn't realize that this one had never been answered.. just right-click while draging over the popup piano roll.. it will adjust the current scale.

Hmmm.. now I got a question... is there a 'insert track' hotkey? me thinks not... just asking to make sure I didn't miss it. Can we have one jules? can we.. can we.. can we..

..it's easy to add a hotkey, but do you really insert so many tracks?

Post

Actually I use a lot of tracks to feed other tracks.. so while I don't have many instruments running.. I'll still have a lot of tracks. For Example.. I make tracks that hold only controller information but route to other tracks and sometimes I keep the controllers seperate.. this way I can label everything and I know exactly what parameter of what VST it controls.. without guesing CC's. Also, I'll easily use 8 tracks just for the stereo pairs coming from Ableton. Then I always have to remind myself to click the actual track on left, then find the insert on the panel in order to do so. It'd be conveient to just hit CTRL-T for example.. and have a new track instead of fishing around.. especially if you use a lot of tracks like me.

ModuLRk, tks! I knew it must be easy and somehow I couldn't figure it out. :D

...another newbie question:
How to export a track to MIDI file? I've tried, but always got an message stating that there's no data exported therefor no midi file for me... :help:

Post

I'll have another look at midi exporting - it's been a while since I've tried that, to be honest..

Post

ok, i assume this can be done judging from ModuLR's comment here regarding new tracks... but i can't figure out how, or find any documentation on it anywhere.... how can i automate controls on VST instruments?

Post

You can't. Yet.
jules is working on it.
If only us nagging horde wouldn't come up with 'useful suggestions' how to make Tracktion better, no doubt it would have been there already.

Yeah.. when I speak of automation.. either I'm using Midi CC's or loading the instrument in Chainer and assigning Midi CC's to VST automation parameters. Thus I can basically automate anything for the time being, until Jules releases the "native" vst automation.
