I lost a couple songs tonight

Have you ever lost important data because you forgot to make regular backups?

when using hardware yes i used to loose stuff. ironically it was always when trying to back it up.

I have two sets of hard drives - one set in my main DAW, and an exact duplicate set that I keep in a fireproof chest. I manually mirror the drives once every few months (and do interim backups to DVD+R every month).

If a main DAW drive dies, I can literally take the drive out and swap in the duplicate and I'm up and running again - a 15 minute operation.

Why all the hassle? I once asked myself how I would feel if I lost every song I've ever written for the last 25 years. Since my answer was 'completely heartbroken', this was my only course of action.

I've had a few drives die on me in the past, but I've never lost data.
