Midi key sensitivity and Traktion Compression

Hi all, have just spent last year building tracking and control room. Last week fired up Delta 1010, Studio Projects SP 828 pre amps, Rode NT 2000, M Audio BX 8a monitors, Roland touch sensitive keyboard/midi, and was blown by sound. But I have a few queries:

1. No matter how the keyboard player plays the grand piano in Samplitude VST through Roland she cannot get soft notes-it just plays one level. How do we control the key sensitivity-through Samplitude-Release/attack etc?????

2. Dumb question, but in a vocal track there was one cough-how do I cut out the cough?

3. Vocalist has huge range and I tried to use Traktion compression. What is consensus on Traktion compression, seems to not have limiter, also does not seem to tell you what reduction db is, so that you can dial in corresponding gain????

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

1. I'm not sure about this but...in Sampletank, check under the Macro setting. There are two "Touch" settings (my first one is at 64 the second at 127). And under Synth-Settings click Velocity - the bottom row of knobs will change. My Velocity settings are: Curve: normal; Amp: 20. Also, make sure the compression isn't turned all the way up. If none of these works, check the midi settings for Tracktion and the keyboard.

2. If you want to just cut the couch right out, then locate it and use the trim key (forward slash /). You can fade out/in the edit by dragging the little fader box (the little box with the diagonal line at the beginning and end of clips) - this should make the edit alittle less obtrusive.

3. Try Blockfish (FishFillets). It's free. There are a few others out there too.

I dont know if this will help but, (I'm using an M-Audio midi controller) but there were 2 things that I did to get keyboard sensitivity to work.
#1) In T2, make sure that "set all incomming note velocity to full" is turned off in your midi input device.
#2) In T2, (in the OPTIONS in the lower left corner), make sure that "use incomming velocities for midi step entry" is enabled.

Mic technique for the singer. Compression and limiting do not work while tracking. You would need hardware for that.

Still, the singer needs to know how to move closer to and farther from the mic depending on how loud he sings.

Mike, thanks for the info on track editing, just cut out all the coughs and excessive breathing on vocals on a track-sounds much better.

I am going to buy a very nice compressor for main vocals and acoustic guitar, and a DBX 1046 for drums/bass on tracking.

However, am I right in saying that the Tracktion 2 compression (applied during mix down) has no limiter and no way of monitoring how much db reduction is going on, so we therefore cannot know how much input gain to dial up.

If so seems to be odd.

Mike, is Blockfish (Fishfillets) a plugin compressor, and if so is it any good, ie does it measure db reduction through meters?

Blockfish is a VST plugin compressor. I like it for vocals (usually after I've recording them). I'm not sure if it has the kind of metering you're after. Here's the KVR link:

I have seen some VST compressors with more extensive metering but I couldn't name them off the top of my head. For live vocals you're probably better off using hardware, like PT said, but the VST compressors can help a bit after the fact.
