when it comes down to it, i'm not concerned with the accuracy of it's emulation of the Mutron Bi-Phase. So, how good do you think it sounds compared to the nice free one's: Bram's SupaPhaser and Kjaerhus' Classic Phaser? Any other free one's out there i should consider before i splash down the money?

thanks everyone! :D

*edit* don't have time until this weekend to demo it. just wanted some initial opinions :)

oops, thought i was in the effects forum

Phase Two is as good a software phaser as I've heard, based solely on comparing it with the expected sound of hardware phasers. Check out modezero.com to hear what various hardware units sound like.

It, however, is only one colour of phaser, so not exhaustive. There are lot of variables that can change in a phaser, so others may be equally useful.

Here's a demo of a bunch. The set-up is very different on most of them, so it's near impossible to get 1:1 comparisons on the same settings. This isn't a scientific test, just something to give you an idea of the sounds. I tried to make them somewhat similar sounding (though didn't devote too much effort, so the LFO speeds are all over the place, I mostly focused on getting a characteristic sound from each phaser. Some sound like ass on different settings).

phaser clip

dry loop
xhip phaser
Kjaerhus Classic Phaser
antti's Phase-90
Simulanalog's PS-1
Bram's Supaphaser
Luxonix LFX-1310
Audiomulch phaser
Audio Damage Phase Two

They all come off very different. Some change the gain of the signal without any adjustments, several have more precise control over frequency range and wet-dry mix, several have distortion stages, some offer different modulation, most of them have different staging options. There's very different volume responses in the clips, and unfortunately some clipping (some have very aggressive feedback, while others don't. Supaphaser was the quietest of the bunch).

Personally, I like the phaser in Mulch and Phase Two the best of the bunch, with Simulanalog trailing closely. But all of them have their uses. Xhip's phaser can sound awesome on some settings, but sounds like ass a lot of time, so its tricky to get right. Supaphaser doesn't sound like a phaser to me, but it has so much other things in there that it still makes for a good effect.

Check this thread for some more bits on Phase Two

shamann, once again, you've gone above and beyond. thanks a lot. much appreciated. 8) :D

To my untrained ear-- I really like the sound of Simulanalog's PS-1 and it's free!. Audio Mulch and Phase Two sound very nice too. Then again you could probably find use for all of them!

The Simulanalog suite is quite the collection....free or otherwise 8)

On that ground, how much of them offers tempo/sync-modulation ?

maybe, someone here want to try my Psycho-Phaser. it's free and has sync - although i recently noticed, that sync seems not to work in FruityLoops. mmmhh...
