How can I record a live performance of me playing a VSTi with Tracktion as a midi file!? Please take in mind that I play VST's with my laptop keyboard (via MKey)!

Could you please help me? Thanks!

jp,

I haven't used MKey but I've used similar programs (I'm on a Mac). I think the process should be pretty much the same. Start up MKey before Tracktion. Check the settings page to see if it recognizes MKey (it might come through your standard midi interface) and make sure the inputs are enabled. Back in Tracktion projects, open an edit (or create a new edit). On the left hand side drag the midi interface box to the track you want to play on (the little arrow will show up and point to the track). On the right hand side pick a filter and drag it to the same track (just to the left of the volume and pan control for that track). You'll get a pulldown menu with the various VST effects and instruments. Choose a synth (they have little keyboards icons next to them). Hit record and play (make sure you've selected the track your synth and midi interface are on - just click on the track). Tap your keyboard keys and that should be it! Press stop when you're done.

There may be one other issue. I think some of these keyboard midi porgrams have a way of over-riding the keyboard shortcuts used by Tracktion (ie "R" for record). Maybe someone else knows the answer to that one or MKeys has a setting for it.

Hope this helps,
Mike

why not just press the record button before you start playing?

Isn't midi-yoke reuired?

I remember needing Jaltoh's Thalamus, though I'm not sure that's still the case. Also, Midi-Yoke.

jp, sorry I didn't understand your problem in the other thread in the "hosts" forum. Next time I'll have to remember to ask what is being used as the input device. That might've saved you a day or two of troubleshooting. :D

If you go to adbe.org, there should be instructions somewhere on how to record the MIDI, using Mkey.

Recording with Mkey

The solution is quite simple once you read MKey's Manual! It involves Thalamus just like you suggested Lunch Money!

Thank you for all the help!
