Here is a spreadsheet that will allow you to generate groove templates with randomness added to a basic pattern. So if you had a basic pattern of 8 notes you could repeat that several times, with each repeat being slightly different. I'm not sure what the limit is if any, but creating templates externally allows more than the 32 notes you see in the template editor. I've had up to 96 notes, and with randomness included, there's no repeat of the 8 note (or whatever) pattern within the 96 notes.

Download the spreadsheet from here (http://users.bigpond.net.au/bunyip/groove_template_generator.xls) and follow this procedure:-

1. Enter values into the orange cells.

2. Delete (or add) Note lines. e.g. delete lines containing Note 9 5%, Note 10 20%, until you have the desired number of notes as defined by the basic (seed) pattern.

3. Some of the lines in the yellow area now contain #REF!. Delete these.

4. Add lines just before </GROOVETEMPLATE> to allow for the total number of notes in the overall pattern.

5. Copy the "<SHIFT delta..." lines and paste them into the space created in step 4. Repeat this until the space is filled. The Random Values column MUST be included.

6. Copy the yellow area and paste into a text editor. Delete all tabs. Save with a .trkgroove extension. This file can now be imported into the template editor within Tracktion.

NB Be very careful modifying the spreadsheet. Make sure you understand how changing the contents of cells will affect the result. Watch out for cells containing references such as $C$9. For example, the calculated values in the yellow area.

If you like it, it's yours. If you have any problems with it, well they're yours too.

BTW, the 8 note pattern in the spreadsheet was taken from the templates posted by IIRs in this thread.

Also, if you want, you can put groups of groove templates into a single file. The lines beginning <"GROOVETEMPLATE name..." and ending at </GROOVETEMPLATE> can be copied from one template and inserted just before </GROOVETEMPLATES>. You can probably have as many of these sections in one file as you like.

You may have known most of this already - I didn't see any of it with a quick look through the forum. But then, I've only been looking at MIDI in Tracktion for the past week.

Wow! I didn't know that! Thanks for the tip, I'll be able to tidy up my groove library enormously :D

I like your randomness idea too, I might have to play around with that sometime.. 8)
