I'm already usiong the Bejeezus out of the MIDI loop record. What can I say? :!:

I wish it had a couple features, though, like a way to delete only one or a few takes instead of all but one, and a way to rank takes would be nice, also a setting that will go through all the takes in succession so you can kick back and listen to each without reselecting. If any of these settings are available some way (they weren't obvious to me if they are indeed there), someone let me know.

make a copy of the clip, select the takes you like, then use the delete option, that should keep the ones you care about.
Someone shot the food. Remember: don't shoot food!

Re. master meter thingy-- surely transients like that are going to be discovered at the track level? And if not, you STILL use your ears, and at the end, you can show the bottom area and use the master volume's non-destructive "normalize" function.

I'm betting you have a compressor/limiter somewhere there in the master area, so spikey transients should already be tamed anyhow, no?

I definitely don't see any meters being necessary, strictly speaking. That doesn't mean I don't use them, but toggling on/off is an option for when my brain tells me I just gotta have that feedback to stay sane. Or, I can feed every track to a destination track in lieu of the master area, which would give me a new "master meter", too.

the only time you need meters would be when you're recording. input.. the effects of compression and other effects make relative volume and metering somewhat of an ear thing.

just keep that in mind.

...and your output... don't clip on your output. makes daddy happy. now go get me the paper, i gotta take a dump.

You are saying a different copy on a different track for each take, like you do when you are compositing? I'm aware of that option, I'd just like to have a cleaner way of doing it, since I might want to just clean up the list of takes on first review, and not have to use up a bunch of tracks until I actually want to go through the compositing process later. I also might do, say, 5 takes and want to get rid of all but two of them, then try 5 more. Having that all be quickly possible while staying on the original loop track/dropdown would be better, IMO.

It's true that if you have your master comp up you have a meter there to look at, if you feel the need. I have dual monitors so leaving something like that up is an option for me.

I guess the point is taken about watching for overs on tracks, but one universal meter is a little easier to keep an eye on.

One problem with just trusting your ears is that, if you use a lot of saw synths and various distortion effects, it can be a bit of a brain teaser to try to know by ear if there is digital clipping present as well. I like having those bars present for that reason at least. Maybe it's a "Linus blanket" thing.
:)

Lunch money, that's a clever idea about routing to another track as an alternate (or preliminary) master bus. That may be the best answer, IMO. One limitation, though, would be if you were vertically scrolling a lot. If this "master bus track" was constantly scrolling out of view, you'd probably be better off just toggling the transport frame.

Put a VU meter plug on the master out and lock it. Now toggle the properties panel open, you can see the master for clipping and mix.

Personally I check for clipping as the last thing before mixdown. I mean why make it hard on yourself? turn the master down and your speakers up if your worried about clipping changing the sound.

This whole point is somewhat of a negative, ill thought about knee jerk reaction.

Also, there was a good thread a while back showing that with a 32bit mix engine there is no need to worry about track overs creating clipping, the only place that matters is the master bus.
