If a pickup is too close the strings, it can distort. I've done that with my previous guitar: I had the bridge pickup *very* close to the strings, and it distorted with a clean amp, while the neck pick up would not - with the same amp setting. It was just a tiny distortion, but easily audible.

I got no doubt about the power coming out my guitar...and yes you can hear the difference...
