Hink, you have missed my point completely and utterly. But that's OK, it's easily buried in this thread. To wit:
MW commented that it was the distortion sound of his pickups on the Twin emulator mp3, in response to CR's comment that a Twin shouldn't distort like that.
I was simply stating that this was impossible.
No more, no less.

I think you are basically right with passive pickups but active pickups - with a preamp like EMGs - can potentially be clipped. Bass players sometimes add a second 9 V battery to get 18V for the extra headroom.Lunch Money wrote:I'll repeat-- a pickup cannot distort. It simply cannot, will not, and will never. It defies the laws of physics and sound to say that a pickup distorts.
The shape of attack transients varies from pickup to pickup too - any shaping involves some distortion of the source waveform (string) but the sort of voltage gate type clipping you get from an amp is not going to happen in a passive pickup.
Funny thing is that even acoustic instruments can produce waveforms that look clipped - the fundamental frequency on a trumpet or trombone (pedal tone) has all the excursions on one side clipped - you see something like a sine wave with the descending parts of the curve flattened off. When trumpet players play a pedal tone it doesn't sound pure either - it is not used for musical effects much more as a warmup exercise.

actually I realised that...but it beats another argument about how good/bad the mp3 is...Lunch Money wrote:Hink, you have missed my point completely and utterly. But that's OK, it's easily buried in this thread. To wit:

Though the concept of I'll make you an amp sim if you tell me what the amp sounds like is amusing as all hell...
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Those are really strange posts
I don't do that anymore.![]()
I just wanted to bump the mp3 demo list. It's absolutely inevitable and extremely necessary to have it presented every few hours. While it was so rare during the now disappeared day I got a little overexcited and bumped it again so that it probably will be sufficient for the next few hours. I'll reconcider a bump of that list when we reach the next page or so. I decided to better make a stupidt joke than to write something overly serious AGAIN ...![]()
