New x86-based Macs are out!

So basically you buy a $2500 lap top and wait god knows how long for all the devs to start porting stuff? And sometimes even get charged for the universal version ala Ableton?

I don't mind that Ableton want some money for the port, and honestly I'm not planning on getting an Intel mac until after Ableton release Live 6, so I'll effectively get the universal binary for free.
People buying the Intel macs right now are going to be early adopters, and suffer accordingly. If I had the money, and time, I might, but I think it would be smarter to wait until after my apps are all upgraded to newer versions, and get whole new features for the money, plus a powerful laptop to use it on.

Hey at least Ableton are updating the software for PPC and PC users for free? that's pretty cool of them. I doubt NI do that, and Apple aren't doing that with Logic. Live is easily the best program out there right now for performing live IMO.

Ableton are also refunding the 49$ fee for the Intel mac version off of the upgrade to Live 6, which will include dual processor support! So honestly that was the lamest jab at a company I've ever read there AD80, why on god's green earth wouldn't you want to support Ableton while they port your DAW to Intel mac, then effectively double your CPU? Oh yeah! you also get the latest version! All for the same price that PC and PPC mac users will pay to update to Live 6, just with a down payment scheme.
I really can't think of a fairer update? barring just biting the cost of porting, can you?

You buy a very expensive, trendy machine RIGHT NOW, and most your apps run at half speed (or at a much slower speed than they should for a new comp)Thats if they even run at all on the new system . As if that wasnt enough some apps will take weeks or months to port to the new system.

As somebody who actually uses his apps to make money, I think thats absurd! But if you just use your new computer to surf the net and run iLife and make music as a hobby every now and then, I guess its ok. Nah not really, it still would suck.

Well, we have to consider that they released it half a year sooner then sceduled. And that was a suprice for everyone, including the developers. Neighter apple nor any pro-app developer would recomend to use it just yet, for what we doo.

Apple released it this soon to be nice, however they might not have thought through the full lenght of the effect of this... However, its ready for the largest crowd, thouse whos not typical "pro" users. Internet, and your digital life (managing your cameras and mp3 players, etc. with the iLife programs), it handels straight out of the box, at the full speed.

Im not saying this was a good decition by apple, by the way!

I want a macintel too, but its absolutely no point in getting one before late 2006!

In the meen time, my 2ghz centrino M is spanking fast! (at least with Live5) So ill upgrade to Live 6 the same time, and hopfully Tracktion will follow multicore in the future.

Uh, no, it's not. You used Ableton as an example of a company that you have to wait, and pay for the Intel version of, and Ableton are:

1. Releasing a Intel version in less than a month according to plan, with public beta's soon....

2. Taking the 49$ fee for the Intel mac as a down payment for...

3. Live 6, which will support the dual core mac laptops, and dual processors in general.

So the wait is less than a month, get a Intel ready version of Live, upgrade in June and get a doubling of speed, again, and the payment goes towards the upgrade price. Really, about the absolute worst company to choose to say that Apple sucks, and see what the other companies are doing?

Also, if you run Logic, you really don't need anything else, the rest is gravy. (Granted, Logic is so CPU efficient that it's almost pointless to worry about a new machine for that app.)

Sure, anybody who knows what's in store will stick with what they have for audio right now, but I might bite if I get some solid plugs like Wave Arts or PSP with Intel versions. Live on a dual 1.87 Centrino style chip has to be nice!
Basically I have an old desktop G4 that I couldn't really sell for anything reasonable anymore, so I'll always have a full PPC kit during any transition, but honestly, in a few months I might pick up a laptop for live work..... I'm going to try to stick to my plan of getting one next year though.

So you're saying the same thing I'm saying, you have to wait, and you have to pay. Period.

I wasnt trying to single out Ableton I just happen to notice it on the front page of kvr. You also have to pay for the new Logic universal version. Lets see how many other companies make you pay, and make you wait.
Doesnt sound like that good a deal to me AT THE MOMENT, especially when considering the lappies cost a bundle.

That said, after all the switch is complete (god knows how long from now), and IF the new books can run windows and OSX flawlessly, I'd definitely be in the market for one.

Yeah right. The iPod on its own could probably keep the company afloat for years. Plus I read somewhere their market share in computers is actually up to like 5%. Soon everyone will be using macs. Ok that last sentence wasnt true .
