Making a Custom Control Surface from old midi gear

I haven't been able to figure out how to get my old Ensoniq VFX-SD to be recoginzed by the create custom control surface feature in T2.1
The VFX-SD has an on-board sequencer with dedicted transport control buttons. I'd like to very simply use those buttons to control T. I don't want to use the VFX-SD as a midi clock source - I just want those buttons to tell T to move, stop, etc.
Failing that, I do have a Behringer V-Amp that is my other piece of gear with MIDI capability - perhaps I can map some of the buttons on that to the transport control?
Any help here? The release notes don't have much details in them.

That's what I thought, but it doesn't appear to work that way - at least Tracktion acts like nothing is happening with my VFX SD button presses. In the past, I did get this keyboard to sync with my old sequencing software, powertracks pro audio.Lunch Money wrote:As long as your unit is transmitting MIDI into a MIDI port, it's just a matter of clicking or wiggling and then assigning a control.
That's not really what I'm looking for here - I'm looking just to use the button presses to control the transport. I guess it's possible that these are not transmitting midi - I need one of those old-school midi status detector things.

Yup, fire up MIDI Ox.
Also, and forgive me if this is obvious-- once you "add custom control surface", you need to select it in your list of controllers and assign a MIDI device to it (the one the VFX SD is connected to).
Following that, press "edit controller mappings" and let the 'wiggle and assign' fun begin.
If that doesn't work, I'm afraid I have a final suspicion-- the buttons on the VFX don't actually seem to be MIDI-capable buttons. But, the literature I'm looking at doesn't actually go into specific detail, it just seems like they don't, to me.

greg,
I did select the device I created and I did find my manual for the VFX - It doesn't look like it transmits those button presses as MIDI, at least according to the midi implementation chart. I think next I'm going to try sacrificing the top couple of notes on the keyboard - is there a way to ignore those as actual notes?

It all depends on whether or not you need the keys available as "keyboard keys" also. If not, you can map each of your keyboard keys to perform a function. If yes, then you have a few options:
1. Just be careful about what you press. This involves no extra programming or work-a-roundery whatsoever!!
2. Set up 'regions' using any number of tools, such as MIDI Ox or a MIDI "filtering" (not sound filter, CC filter) plug-in. I don't know enough about all those to recommend one, but I know it can be done.
