original flipper wrote:What about an option in the preferences that simply gives you a FULL screen (get ready) detachable Midi edit screen (on clicking over a midi clip)- user definable (as in stretch and move it where ever) and no one is distressed, everyone is happy, my/your dual monitors can be used - give it a key command to open/close and have the host remember it's last sizing and position.
That's fine and dandy for MIDI folks, but I'm an audio guy. I use the MIDI editor, but rarely, for triggered drums and synths added to recorded performances. A full-screen MIDI editor won't, I'm afraid, help audio folks very much. :?

Right, but it WILL help the MIDI folks and it's optionally detachable, not by default. So we'd still be doing it the way we've always done it.

Think about it this way:

You double-click a MIDI track and it expands to editor size, within the track the same as always. But the toolbar has a "handle" of some sort. And when you drag it 'x' number of pixels, it 'duplicates' the MIDI part (visually only... it's not an actual duplicate) into a separate window that can be expanded full-sized or dragged to another monitor.

No worries! Sounds worthwhile.

if 80% of the screen REALLY isnt enough for you what about just removing the current limit on how far we can stretch clips vertically and add another option in the 'track resizing' options of 'double-clicking a track toggles between normal and full screen height' ???

That was my initial reaction, too, pHz. I'm sure the only reason there's still a limitation is because the current limitation is exactly = the old size with properties panel visible. It could probably be updated fairly quickly if the team's not on something else.

The removable one makes it different, but my only question would be: what is there in the original screen that you still want to see while you have the MIDI editor maximized in the second monitor? Just a sincere question-- when I edit MIDI, I usually want it "above" audio clips and stuff, not on a separate screen.

HI

I have T2 on my DAW - which has dual monitors, I can 'Stetch' T2 accross both monitors ... herein lies the problem, you are only stretching a single monitor GUI - you are not expanding it - so you only really have a magnified view of a fully expanded single screen view ... in this case over 2 monitors.

The other issue is height - it might not seem like a big improvement but you are only getting about 70% of the screen height; 100% of the height would make a significant difference in what you have to work with.

Look, at the end of the day I purchased T1/2 on what it could do, not what I wanted it to do (or in this case, show) - I accept this, but I do think my ramblings on the Midi view et al are not just something I would like to see implemented; I do believe others would like something similar.

When you look at the likes of most other host programs they do feature a full screen view, I don't think this is for any other reason than the fact that some people need that kind of space to work in, or at least to work more eficently.

I don't think the thought 'I don't use midi, so what use is it' really washes ... does it?

I wish I knew how to post screen shots as I would like to show you a typical guitar solo (the sort of midi thing I work on rthat requires space)over 5 minutes that travels up and down 5 octaves, you might better appreciate the headache this type of work can impart on a somewhat limited midi view.

I don't really need to have my midi view 'in line' with the arrangement as my ears and sight of the timeline cursor will show me where things are.

I also find that keeping the arrange page on 1 monitor and my piano-roll on the other works just fine, I also might put VSTi's on the second monitor.

I think working with dual monitors does aquire a certain way of working; on 'big' arrangements or towards the mixing stage I might spread the whole arrange page (XT is what I currently use and it 'expands' over 2 monitors just fine) over 2 monitors as I can put the finishing touches in place better, or simply get a panoramic feel/view of things.

That's all cool, I wasn't criticizing, I was just wondering what the 2nd monitor brings to the mix.

When you stretch across 2 monitors, you *initially* just magnify what's already in there. But with the mouse wheel you zoom back out a bit again and it's not just stretched anymore, you have recaptured more note-entry space. The fact that it initially "appears" to only be magnifying is irrelevant since we all zoom in and out all the time and it's a quick flick of the mousewheel to do so.

If you're editing MIDI on piano roll, you don't need to see the input devices, so you can bin that area, too. The filters area is a bit more scalable (for some reason) than the input devices area, so you can either shrink it back or also hide this area.

That takes care of horizontal. As for vertical, I (and pHz) are already agreeing that full vertical height would be cool.

In fact, I'm agreeing straight across the board... let's get maximum functionality in there for my MIDI brothers!

Any of my personal points of view are simply that-- not criticisms, and although I can't 'make' people interpret my words the way I intend them, I assure you that when I write my personal view it's not meant to imply that my way is better. Heck, I only use the piano roll to fix "realtime" playing or create/modify drums. So I can only imagine what it's like to be working on a full-on MIDI-filled composition at this point in time.

From my personal perspective, though, I would never edit MIDI in a separate screen. I want to see what it looks like in relation to MIDI tracks above or below it, or in relation to audio waveforms above and below it. I'd never put them into 2 separate monitors because they wouldn't relate to one-another in my head.

Hey, if a full-screen midi editor and mixer bring enough new users to Tracktion that more resources can go into its development, then bring'em on!

well said that planet. :D

Definitely plus one for the "resize to full screen height" request.

HI

'Lunch Money' - I never thought you were being critical ... or anything like that.

I rarely use emoticons, so perhaps my postings come accross as 'overly' serious or something?

But as I stated before - I really just want to see this area improved as I can't stress how much I like T2.

walley: let's go! :box:

I don't want a user base full of people asking questions about the stupid mixer. Every time someone had a question, "HOw do you do sends in the mixer" or whatever, I'd start off by saying: "Well, first disable the mixer. There's no need for it in T."

But, if it got them in the door and on the road to using Tracktion, I guess it could be there. It's just gotta be easily disabled. And removed from memory. ;)

I would like OMF support.

I would like to be able to drag n drop midi clips into and out of a clip scratchpad/browser type thing that was accessible from the edit page.
