VST Midi Clip Browser / Auditioner

I have thousands of midi drum clips that I find very tedious to audition and find the right patterns that I want. I use BFD and it has a nice virtual drummer, however, it is still a pain to drag and drop clips into the VD just to audition them. Much too time consuming.

I have searched in vain for clip browser that would automatically audition the clips when they were highlighted (just like the clip browser in tracktion does for audio). After thinking about it more, I thought a VST plug-in might be available that would allow for fast review and selection of the clips desired and perhaps link together several patterns into a drum track automatically, much like the BFD virtual drummer but with more control over the number of patterns, timing, fills, etc. If anyone has seen how session drummer used to work in Cakewalk/Sonar it would be similar to that but with the bonus of being able to audition the midi files directly off your disk.

Anyone know of any products that fit this description?

You can put your midifiles in library projects and audition them at the Projects page in Tracktion. I find it quite a nice way to audition rythms for beats and then simply drag the files you want to use to the Editpage to have them inserted in your Edit.

You have some great ideas there though! Personally I don´t use midifiles that much but especially the linking together of patterns would be nice...

I'd like this functionality, too. I find myself getting more into MIDI percussion loops and further away from audio loops these days.

After looking further, I ran across the recent release of Acid Music Studio 6. This has an excellent clip explorer that will audition/preview midi & audio clips in time with currently playing arrangement. It will even loop the previewed clip over a section of the current arrangment. This fits my style of building a song where I'll come up with a guitar riff and then want to look for a drum part that will fit. The BFD vst fits right in. It looks like I will be able to compose complete drum tracks with fills and easily move them to Tracktion for recording and mixing. I have also found that BFD behaves better in recording situations with midi files rather than the virtual drummer. Added bonuses around chopping up the clips, beat slicers, modifying the clips on the fly with a piano roll editor, Midi event viewer/editor, etc.

Cheap too. $69.95 retail.

Anyone have other suggestions before I buy?
