Tracktion newbie questions

Hi, ten days as a Tracktioner...Hurrah! Some questions though:

1. What's the difference between looping and copy/paste an audio clip? More convenient to Loop?

2. How can I edit an audio clip externaly (audacity) and save it under the same file name? I can't do that now since the file is locked (by tracktion I guess).

3. Is there a way to store the settings in plugin together with a project? All the new ones for example revert to the first setting in the factory list when I open an edit.

Well, I take a shot...
1. When you loop, all the repetitions stay in the same clip, making it easier to move around. Also, you making the clip longer or shorter maintains the looping (making it very Acid-like).

2. Once you have your external editor set (in Settings, I think), select the clip and then in the properties panel click the option for editing externally (can't remember where exactly -- I'm at work).

3. In the properties panel when the plug is open, click the save preset button and it'll ask you to name it. If your settings aren't sticking, make sure you don't have any program changes in the MIDI driving the plug (select the clip and click remove all program changes -- or something like that).

I'm sure others will chime in if I've gotten something wrong...

Sadly you can´t save the file under the same name in Audacity. Works fine with most other audio editors though so it must be something in Audacity preventing this...

Do you know any other free or extremly cheap audio edit software just as good as Audacity?

Acoustica, http://www.acondigital.com/index_english.html. Maybe not "extremely" cheap (34.90$), but for what you get I would say it is very cheap. The only downside is that you can´t use VST-effects in it yet, but it seems to be on the list for an update not to far in the future..

You could also try Goldwave...the demo is quite functional (lets you do a certain number (usually enough!) of changes before having to be restarted)..it is also fairly cheap to buy.

btw I think we determined in another thread that Audacity use its own format to save files...you have to export .wavs...thus Tracktion is unable to "re-import" because when you save in Audacity it is no longer a wav.

Just to echo what's already been said--

- "loop" adds a few advantages if you're looping the same clip many times in a row. Since I only tend to repeat a loop two times in a row (if that), I use copy & paste.

- Acoustica is a good editor. When you save with the same filename (clicking "save" rather than "save as..."), it updates the waveform in Tracktion right away. Pretty cheap even if you're like me and only ever use it for the noise reduction and sample-rate/format conversion.

- As mentioned, your settings should save in your project. If they're not, something is amiss. Make sure you're saving your project, though!

Hm, taking a closer look I see that the settings actually are saved, but the name in the program field is the same as the first preset. This explains a lot...I wondered why those presets sounded so alike my own settings
But why is not the name field updated? Confusing or am I missing something?

I believe it happens since the host doesn't really saves "a preset" (as a fxp/b file or a plugin own format), but rather save a snapshot of the parameters.
This means that unless you load a preset from a file, the host would just show what name was before any changes you made, regardless how extensive they were.
