It's similar to what Charlie Parker used to say about his horn. It has to become an inextricablly connected part of you, your body, your mind, your "soul".

no need to get your coat...there's a big difference...you have the choice to build your sound or dial up a preset...I would imagine it would suck not having a choice...I love presets, but ones I've made...that way if I put a song on hold for a while I can go back to the exact same tone...sorry no phaser per se though I guess phase could be a by-product...Lunch Money wrote:Clip's too short, but I coulda sworn I heard a tad of phaser in there. Great sound, though!
Regarding presets-- I'm in the middle of a wee demo tutorial for the folks at Channel 6 who use the TonePort. Not to demonstrate tones (in fact, I'm just whipping up tones, not focusing on them) but just to demonstrate throwing a track together using a particular sequencer.
I tried my best to use presets so that they'd have a point of reference, but at the end of the day, only one preset survived unaltered.
I'm not that meticulous, or articulate, but I can hear instantly, "Man, I need more mid" and then I just quickly throw'er up to "8" or whatever... I don't sit there and tweak to see if "7.75" is better, I just throw it into the ballpark.
Even more telling than that, though-- I've heard the "jumping off point" argument lots, and I used to agree. But I'm starting to disagree these days. I could pick a "Nashville" preset because I want a twangy telecaster sound, and then all the sudden I just go, "Man, this Tweed sim isn't cutting it..." and switch to the AC30. Then, "This cab is all wrong" and cycle through a few cabs to find one that sounds right. Then, "Now the tone stack needs to be addressed."
By that point in time, I'd have been better off just building from the ground up. Sure, I might have still tried the Tweed to begin with (a tele... a "tweed"... a good starting point!) but just as an amp selection, not as a preset. Ya know?
One exception I've found with the TonePort is the "Bring Me To Life" preset, which I think sounds great for certain kinds of music. I rarely need to touch that one. I've heard other fans of the unit with other presets they gravitate to. I almost always feel inspired by Green Machine Amp II's "Paula's Favourite" preset with no additional tweaking.
Come to think of it, I guess that makes my entire argument kind of schizophrenic... on one hand, I think you should build a tone from the ground up. But on the other hand, I've stumbled across some presets that work well.
I'll just get me coat...
Greg

meh... Tone, tone tone... It IS about the gear first, playing 2nd... It has to be.... amps take a teeny tiny crappy sound (listen here: http://www.filegone.com/kbkg right channel) and make it sound awesome (left channel), well, not in this case, but you know wot I mean
ps. This mess was made after 1 yr not playin'... man am I rusty... (I had kinda lost the passion)... I think it's slowly returning.... hehe... Zappa mite like this, wot ya think?
disclaimer: NOT for the faint hearted
1 take, warts and all (read, lazy)

What? Does that means that I have to let them implant TonePort into my body so I can become real artist, and handle preset making easyBeardedone wrote:It's similar to what Charlie Parker used to say about his horn. Yeah right!
It is just an affirmation that time spent with an instrument/rig is directly proportional to the results...........

see it's about going "there" knowing the route helps a lot...it doesn't matter if you walk or take a lear jet...as long as you know how to get "there"...

All this talk about the amps/amp sims making the tone is silly. How did all our heroes do it without the technology? Style man, style...plug it in, turn it on and play the shit outta it...LP, SG, Strat, Tele...whatever, they all have their own contributions. BUT I chose my guitars on feel and how it sounds when I play it. I bet that most of our heroes picked the guitar mostly on the same things...I can get a Strat tone outta my Tele if I play it right...
Still, if I can emulate Jimi's setup in a sim and it comes even reasonably close, I'll buy it. Why? cuz it inspires me....not that I'll ever in 2 lifetimes sound like Jimi but that possibility gives me inspiration...
And for me, anything that inspires me to make more music is worth it's weight in gold...
BTW, whoever said the tone isn't in the finghas...riddle me this Batman...
If my fat finghas grab too much fret is that not affecting the tone? Ever noticed that most of the "shredders" and Jimi for that matter have skinny long fingers...and watch their placement between frets...it varies according to what they are trying to do...and Gordon mentioned that the pick affects tone too...I'll add picking style...so many elements that really do add or detract from "tone"...it ain't just hardware and wood...
I can alter my tone simply but moving my fingers closer to the upper fret or lower fret...and the fret itself matters too...thin frets, fat frets..., alder body, ash body...
BUT no matter what the guitar, if I can't place my fingers on it in a manner that produces "that tone" all the other shit is for nothing...
Funny about 50 pages in, this thread really became about "the tone"...and actually it makes perfect sense because we're all searching for it and can't get it

btw on my sample is just a little more OD than I usually use, no pre-amp on my ax (just the emgs, pa2 is off) and 300ms delay, but not much applied...

Just to be sure I'm understanding this (since the esounds page says the deal ended Dec 31)... if I "crossgrade" from sampletank 2.1 to Amplitube 1.0 I will still qualify for the free upgrade to AT2? Does it matter if I own AT1 already? Just wondering since the full upgrade from AT1 to AT2 is $250 so maybe it is better to lock now at $179 if it's still possible.Squids wrote: Real quick, I think IK will honor the upgrade deal up until the time of release (so even now). I will stand behind that if you buy it on esoundz (even if we have to pay for it). So, you're safe to get the upgrade/crossgrade there are least. I can't speak for anyone else except that I think it probably is okay wherever you get it. Makes sense, should be right?

In case AT2 is actually awesome (and I hope it will be), what would be the "best" way to hook it up to play live? Through a regular amp, or through dedicated PA (meaning instead of having an amp on stage, you got for ex. something like some Mackie' speakers)? Since a cab emulation is already there, there should be no need to re-run the signal again through an amp+cab, no? Full range speaker would be better, or am I wrong?

BTW, he plays a Diezel amp!
My first guitar teacher had such Wurstfingers, too. But man, he could play ...
Best wishes, FRitz
