Tried the demo - sold! Some questions.

Tracktion is almost exactly what I have been looking for. I love the product and want to support it, by purchasing but have some questions:

1. Is there a price for upgrades -- If I buy v2, am I going to have to pay full price for v3? Or upgrade price?

2. Where can I see a roadmap for the next version?

For $150.00 this is a great value. I have high hopes for the plugins that come with it (aside from the free or community ones which you can get without buying it).

3. Are there any show-stopping issues that current users of Tracktion would warn a newcomer about?

4. Is there plans to implement live playing from computer keyboard into MIDI like FLstudio/Live? I'm using Trollo as work around but it doesn't record the incoming stuff as MIDI (small minor issue as I have external controller - just lazy).

The programmer is a god among men. His library JUCE is the coolest thing since sliced bread IMO.

Kudos on a kick-ass host, and last question:

5. Are there other applications using JUCE and if so what? Not asking necessarily only about sound-related JUCE apps either.

1. Still unknown, but Mackie has been very generous toward v1 users (a 20$ downloadable upgrade, a rebate for US buyers of the boxed version)

2. You'll have to inflitrate Mackie for that. Please post it here when you find out.

3. Not here, but do search this forum and Mackie's forum. It is likely that any bug will be mentioned. Several times.

4. Not that I know of, and I don't think this was asked for a lot. You can record MIDI with Trollo using a virtual MIDI loopback device, such a MIDI Yoke.
(nothing wrong with being lazy)

5. You'll have better luck searching in the JUCE forums, I guess. There are several JUCE based plugins floating around. Trackpad is one, if I'm not mistaken. There's a pattern arp called Peggy and a plugin called Plugin Consultant (the latter is KvR database unfer effects).

There wasn't any kind of promises about what would be in T2 different from T1, so if that is any indication of future upgrades then there probably will not be a roadmap.

I'm finding that I use RMIV all the time. I don't really even think too much about other drum VSTi that I have, except the demo BFD.

Final Mix was worth getting into T in the first place for me. There are some mastering snobs on KVR that sneer at it. All I know, is that when I use it, I've always been able to find a present that makes my mixes come to life better than my monkeying around with them for hours on end. Call me lazy - I call it pragmatic.

If you are heavily into MIDI programming, T is still somewhat lacking. I'm sort of an odd-man-out here, but I like to edit midi on a notation editor; piano rolls are a pain to me. T doesn't have notation. No event list editor either - something that can come in handy now and then.

These aren't show stoppers to me.

Several Tracktioneers are also JUCE guys and they've made some cool plugins with JUCE - checkout haydxn and ModulR plugins.

Yeah, one person's "showstopper" is another person's "really, I never noticed!" and vice-versa. If you've demoed it for a while and haven't come across anything yet, you're not likely to hit something that will stop you in your tracks, but that doesn't mean you won't still come across a few things that make you go, "Man, I wish this aspect was a bit different...".

4. I have used MIDI Yoke before (and MIDI-ox, both are awesome). For yoke, I would set the input to be the MIDI Yoke virtual in tracktion input then? Confused about how to lay out the track. Right now I have an Oxygen8 MIDI in as input, then a instance of Trollo followed by JX10 on the right side. Is it as easy as installing the MIDI Yoke and setting the input to one of the virtual MIDI inputs from the drivers it installs?

Greg, agree that some of the questions are loaded and hard to answer. Definitely I think that the piano roll is a bit annoying. There is an option to disable the toolbar by default when editing in piano roll -- this is great as the shortcuts are easy to memorize, etc. Question is: how to display the toolbar? Is there a hotkey to toggle it's visibility?

Have you considered doing notation in an external application, exporting as MIDI and importing? I don't know off hand of any good notation editors aside from the one that comes in Cubase SX3 (which is WAY over my head and I never use it because I can't read music anyway).

grymm-- from the edit window, go to the "options >" button, and look in the bottom 2/3rds for an option called "auto show MIDI editor toolbar". Disable this to see if it helps with your toolbar situation.

Ah, sorry. I have the bad habit of writing late at night and it's a hit-or-miss if I am lucid enough to catch all the details.

There's not a hotkey by default, but you can assign your own. Go to "Settings-> key mappings" and scroll right to the bottom. Create a new hotkey for yourself that'll be easy to remember.
