i knew there was a post explaining how to do this in traktion using the racks but the search turned up nothing.
any help would be great.

IIRs provided the answer for me in this thread a while back.
Do it exactly like he shows here. Set a very fast attack and release, and use the Mackie stereo sidechain compressor "Ducking Big" preset to get started. This will be huge overkill but will immediately allow you to hear results and you can tweak from there.
This works great and really opens up space for the Kick. Clears up the mud you can otherwise have if the kick and bass are clashing at certain frequencies.
