Nice one. But sure is complex. I don't recall how to set up racks and need to find the tutorial. I got lost last time I tried setting up a Kontakt track with more three stero outs. And what is the significance of the black vs the purple connectors?

If you build the drum sub-mix inside a rack like that there is no setting up to do: just use the rack filter instead of the BFD plug-in.

Black connectors transmit MIDI data: you can ignore them all except the one at the far left which connects the MIDI input for the rack to BFD's MIDI input.

First let me get past a simple rack as I am still having trouble getting separate midi clips into two outs with ST2.

OK I tried something yesterday here on my Work PC in Tracktion 2 (Win2K PIII -hey it still works). I set up two midi tracks with SampleTank 2 in a rack with two stereo outs. I wrote short little drum and EP diity and saved it as a trakedit file. I uploaded this file to my exchange server so I could download on my home PC. When I tried to open it again I got the "source data not found" . There was nothing complex about this file - some midi data and one mutitimbral VSTi with two patches all of which I have on my home DAW. What am I missing?

Have you tried exporting it as an archive?

I saved it. I do this all the time with FLS, eXT and Live projects. What's the difference? Shouldn't that be sufficient since there's no audio.

I guess I'll try that. But, I really do not understand Tracktion file management.

A Tracktion edit is not a project.. try zipping up the entire project folder with the main project file, the edits and any audio. Does that work?

OK a trkedit file is not a project. So I exported it just now and I will see if it works tonight. All this after I said I wasn't going to spend any time with Tracktion this week. At least I have learned a few new things.

Gordon, think of the project structure as follows:

Edits are just different arrangements of mixes, plugin selections, midi and audio data, all associated with one particular project. The edit is just the instructions for where stuff is located and what should be done with it. Think of it as a table of contents for one arrangement of a song that you have in the project.

Does that make more sense?

This works just like software that I'm used to here at work; non music software, but a similar feel. That way, if I have multiple edits, but I'm using the same source material in the edits, then I don't have to keep copies of the source material for each edit.

Makes sense now. I do this with larger Sonar projects where I have audio tracks and plugin pre-sets I want to be sure survive any hardware upgrades.

OK Thanks! The archived project transferred just fine. Several major hurdles overcome this week. Now I think I might be able to use this host for comping in midi.
