Tracktion Software

Traktion records in stereo...but not really left and right pans? (left is mixed with right...sort of 'enhanced mono') Do I have a cable problem or am I missing something technical? (Have tried 2 mono's, full left/right pan.

I'm trying to record 2 analogue tracks in 1 take from my old VS880.

Still in 1st week of learning (mouse-clicking)and reading about Traktion 2. If this prog is easy then the competition must be pure applied maths. Still, I'll get there...if I can record 2 tracks per time without investing in an outboard sound card! Thanks for your low-tech reply.

I guess you are trying to do this on a soundcard with only one stereo input? If this is so, go into the settings and click on the soundcard's input then uncheck the box\button that says "treat as stereo pair" now you should have 2 mono ins to use. If you hard pan your 2 incoming tracks left and right, and assign one to each of your "mono" inputs in Tracktion, it should work..

Yes (onboard audio) I'll try in the morning back at base. (I'm replying from other pc.) I think I've tried this option...but worth another bash. Thanks Chester. More questions arriving soon!

Tracktion definitely treats L & R discretely, so if you've panned hard, and still getting crosstalk between the channels, it might be a hardware-related thing, either with the VS880, the original recording on the unit, or with your cabling.

I'm a 1680 user who has pretty much switched over to Tracktion. I think I had a similar confusion to yours when I starting using T.

I think Chester nailed it, but maybe not. Tracktion defaults to record in stereo, but this can be changed to mono. Probably what is happening (and this is an educated guess) is that the inputs within Tracktion are treating your mono signal like it's stereo. To change this, uncheck the "treat as stereo pair" thingee which pops up at the bottom of the screen when you've selected your input device.

Good luck, and ask away! I've found this forum to be invaluable to learning Tracktion (as the planet was invaluable to learning the 1680).

Unchecking "treat as stereo pair" seems pretty simple to me.

...thanks guys for the helpful replies. Having done all you said...and more...now going to try another cable...and try to get the setting not to default to 'direct sound'...am getting two clearly separate signals from VS880...am now getting 3 and sometimes 4 Record icons. Will try cable...then internal sound-configs (on HP-D330) ...then hunt down a decent sound card add-in. No turning back now!!! Still VS is very handy for non-latency effects? Any other uses?

Oh yes, another question. Done some test vocal recordings (in enhanced mono + stereo) Default latency on P4 2.8mhz + 1 gig mem..= 15,9 or something...workable...but long way from 11's in the ref guide picture! Freezing tracks is a slow process I find. Early days. This forum is excellent...and Traktion will one day (soon) be the same after teething troubles. I'm not registering though until it proves to be at least as workable sonically as an 8 year old grey box from Roland.

If you can't lower the latency below 15ms then you may need a different soundcard. Some cards can get you down to 2-5ms. Onboard sound can be as high as 40ms.

Update on input problem. Now using Delta 44. Works well with everything...even plays back multi-tracks in Traktion ...however, recording (like last string of posts with on-board card) is still one channel at best, or leaky stereo!!! My settings panel:
-Analogue Out 1/2 delta 44 (1) (1+2)def-Out
xAnalogue out 3/4 delta 44 (1) (1+2) output
-Analogue in 1 " " (1) input
-Analogue in 2 " " (1) input
xAnalogue in 3 " " (1) input
xAnalogue in 4 " " (1) input
x mixer in L (1)input
x mixer in R (1)input
...treat as stereo pairs= off

Record icon(s) armed left (and right).
stereo track = disabled. E-to-E = on.
Still attempting 2 tracks per time from VS880. Any more ideas Traktioneers?

Oh yes...and I'm panning left and right...everywhere.
Latency is now down to 5ms...so card is defintely much better than on-board gizmo.

THANKS everyone for your help. Traktion is now up and running fine. Questions from now on are likely to be a bit more advanced. Fox...I have found some good uses for the VS880...(Voice signal=line level and 'filtered' to fit...as well plenty of good out-board effects available + a sweet head-cans-monitor thru a free channel...watching those sliders though to avoid ugly feed-arounds!)it will be some time before I finally moth-ball the grey box.

This "I'm new" thread can finally close.
