I'm a little (lot) lost. Bought a crossover cable, installed the remote application (Mac 10.3.9), When I open the remote it can't find the receptor. Ive set it to crossover mode. Tried rebooting both units in different orders. Also, for mounting, the manual says to open the Network Icon and open the Muse folder (for Samba) or the Local folder (for appletalk) but niether one of them are in there. Tried setting the receptor to Appletalk 'on' but it just reverts to 'off' after I push the apply button. I need to register plugins (Colossus) and get to the gui via my comp. Please help...

One situation that comes up quite a bit is expecting the networking to all come up with the desktop. This simply is not the case - just because your system(s) is booted, that doesn't mean the network is good to go. In fact, the Mac is really quite sly about this, because it will appear that your computer is up and running, but in fact there is still a bunch of negotiation occurring on the network.

I'm not a networking guru, but from what I understand there is a ton of negotiation that occurs. All the components on the network go through different phases trying to determine what mode they are in (fixed address, DHCP, or even being the DHCP master). Most of this negotiation is time-out based, which means that there is nothing you can do to really hurry it along, unless you brute force things with manual addresses that are permanently assigned.

As a result, it can take as much as TWO or even THREE minutes for all the negotiation to take place and the components of the network to settle down and get to work. Most people interpret this as "broken", especially since things like Receptor Remote boot almost instantaneously, where as a typical web brower takes quite some time, which essentially buys the system more time to sort out its networking parameters.

If you had a specific thing that you did to get it to work, I'd love to hear about it for the benefit of all. However, I think one of the important things after a power up is to be patient!

I found most of the answers here in the forum after doing many searches. The search for 'Appletalk' was most productive (even though I'm not using Appletalk). This is what I did.

Connected Crossover Cable before booting receptor.
Mac:System Prefs:Sharing-Windows sharing set to 'ON'.
Mac:System Prefs:Network-Created New location-Built in Ethernet-TCP/IP tab-Configure IPv4 to 'Using DHCP'. Clicked renew DHCP lease at some point in the process, don't remember exactly when.

Receptor:Made sure the light at the Ethernet port was lit (showing that the ethernet was connected). Then booted up.
Receptor:TCP/IP setup to 'Crossover' and Windows Networking to 'ON'. I have to set these two parameters on the receptor every time I boot. I haven't figured out how to make it save them yet.

Remote control now works. The Muse and Local folders show in the network pane once everything is up and connected.
