One more reason a mixer would be nice...

...is that you would see the name of the track right under the sliders. It's not uncommon that when I want to make a quick change, I lose visual connection between the track name on the far left and the slider on the far right. Having a vertical, unaligned placements of the sliders on the screen and a horizontal placement of sliders on the control surface and it really feels pretty un-ergonomic.

I can't say that I have ever lost that visual connection. Indeed, most of the time I don't even look at the track name or will have them still (lazily) labelled "Track 7" or whatever. The colours and locations of the clips are my visual cue in most cases.

I still don't want a mixer though; I would prefer it if you could assign names to individual filters which showed as tooltips when hovering over the filter. This would allow me to name multiple Vol/Pan filters things like "pre-comp gain" and "post-comp gain" for example (I often do this to get around the lack of a global threshold control in the Mackie Comps), and would be mega-useful in racks..

.. I also would really like a change in the handling of Vol/Pan filters so that it is easier to grab the volume than the pan when they are shrunk small.. it sems the other way round at the mment which often irritates me!

Personally I think a Tracktion Mixer would be a good
enhancement of the ui. If it was designed so that you
don't need it if you don't want it.

But, I also think it will never happen. I think Beno and Jules's mind is set on a non mixer environment. I think it will crush their dream if they had to implement it. Besides, no mixer sells more Mackie UC's, right?

Fully-scalable drag-"handles" (even if they're invisible as they already are) would do that! Not sure why there's a limitation on how much you can shrink or expand the individual "panels"!

Well even having the number near the slider would help. While the track name label lets me know which track I want to control, the track number tells me which fader on the controler I need to move. I've always wished there was a subtle track number appearing near the track name. That would help a great deal when trying to use the faders. If you are looking at a mix with 20 tracks it is very hard to tell if you are looking at track 14 or 15 for example. Also, you can't simply name the track with a suffix number because as soon as you move the track up or down the list or add/delete/freeze a new track above it, your number is no longer correct.

Adds to the clutter a bit but maybe something like this (and if you didn't like it you could alpha it away - sort of like some people do with clip colors now although that is a saturation issue).

the number thing that you ps'ed up looks like a nice improvement and keeps the no-mixer crowd at bay (of which I'm a card-carrying member). I might have a different opinion if I had a control surface - but for me, right now it's my ears and automation.

+1 to numbered tracks. I like your way of doing it, Rock-- I had always just wished for nothing more than the number, appearing next to the name (ie. 1- Guitars), but I agree that the track number appearing SOMEWHERE would be very handy.

It just kills me when people say this. So you get a $200 program, then you need to spend $1000 to get the functionality of a $300 program?

I'm not clamoring for a mixer myself, it just kills me the lengths that people expect others to stretch.

As I've said before: If an unobtrusive mixer will broaden the tracktion user base enough that more resources will go into its development, then it benefits all Tracktion users.

Here's an analogy for the mixer nay-sayers:

I don't step sequence, because I'm a trained keyboard player. So, the step sequencing features do nothing for me. I'm sure Tracktion would have fewer bugs, be a smaller download, and load faster without those features. So should I go around saying all tracktion users need to learn how to play so as not to burden my enjoyment of the program?

There you go making sense again.

I feel exactly the same way. If Mackie decides to pay Jules or someone else to include a mixer; just give me the opportunity to inobtrusively ignore it and I'll be a happy camper.

Now, if they do that before incorporating grouping of clips/merging of clips, notation, decent time stretching, etc. - then I wouldn't be so happy - I could have bought FL Studio.
