monitoring aux return tracks only

according to tracktion 2 docs, for verbing up some drums, you create a new track for the verb, and set up the aux return as the first filter on that track, and then insert the aux send filters between the vol/pan and meter filters of anything you want routed to that verb.
well, how can I monitor the revrb on the verb-track by itself without have to hear the tracks with the aux sends? because if i mute the tracks with the aux sends there is obviously nothing coming thru the verb track.
should i just place my aux send filters before the vol/pan filter? i guess that means my aux and vol for that track would be completely independent, right?

Well my understanding is that when you aux send to a return track, you are just using the track as a " global track" so that you can apply the same filters to multiple tracks, kind like a sub-mix. Unless there is actually audio or midi data in the return track you wont hear anything from that particular track except for what is being sent there. Other wise just apply a filter to each track.

flamin, thats correct. and i realize thats how it should work, but in some other DAWs you are able to solo the (shared) reverb output itself. i found this helpful. i'm just wondering what the best way to do this is. if i put my aux-send filters *before* the vol-pan filter, will it somehow effect the output of the track itself? or does the aux-send filter just do a "transparent" pass thru?
if you put your aux-send filters after your vol/pan filters, as the docs say, isn't that kinda going against how traditional mixers work? on a hardware mixer arent the aux levels and vol levels completely independent? (btw, i'm in no way advocating that a DAW must mimick traditional hardware, in fact i think that is often limiting).

Solo the source channel.
Mute the source from the volume filter.

that will work for pre-fade aux sends.. for post fade sends you will nned to add another Vol/Pan filter after the send filter, and mute that. ie; you mute the signal after it hits the aux send, but before it gets routed anywhere else.Beno wrote:Solo Isolate the return.
