Guitar Input Not Working, Only Line Input?

Dear All,

I plugged my guitar into the front panel input of the Receptor, which I believe is the high-z guitar input. There was no sound. I touched the tip of the cable with my finger and there was no sound or signal showing in the meters.

I plugged it into the rear panel line input left. I could hear my guitar then. But no sound when I plugged it into the line input right.

I searched the forum and found that all other guitar players have been using the front panel input happily. Can anyone figure out what my problem may be? Any setting that I could be wrong about?

Thanks in advance.

Did you select the guitar input as your source in one of the channels on the mixer page? Try that and adjust channel level to main. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply.

I did choose the coresponding input setting in the "source" area while I tried different inputs. There was no sound at all while I choose "Guitar Input", whichever analog input I plugged the cable into. Also no sound from the right line input.

The funny thing is that, when I plugged my guitar into the rear panel input (left) and played, the led above the front panel input (under the level knob) did light up. Does it just light up no matter which input is receiving signals?

Should I file a ticket in the Muse website? It looks like a technical problem instead of a setting error.

Try a system reset. This won't hurt your settings or anything. Have used this trick a few times when I had problems. Hold down MUTLI button on the front panel. Triple-click the POWER button to restart. Hold MULTI button until you see Loading.... on the LED display. If that doesn't work I would file a ticket. Probably a bad internal connection. Good luck!

The LED light on the front panel will glow either with the line in or with the guitar input.

Of course, you selected the guitar input and adjusted the input gain of the front panel control?

Herbsman's suggestion of a system reset is good, and you should start with a blank preset and open up the guitar input as the source.

Its important to realize that Receptor can only take in data from two of the three input ports at the same time... guitar and line, or SPDIF and line, or guitar and SPDIF, but not all three at once (there is a 4 input limit to our A to D circuit and the PCI chip we are using). So it is possible that you have a preset that is attempting to listen to all three inputs, and one will not be recognized.

If there is still no input signal, then it is quite possible that the input to the guitar card is bad, the cable to between the guitar board and the audio board has come loose, or the input has been blown somehow. If that is the case, please do fill out a helpdesk ticket and we can either send up a new guitar board if you are technically inclined or we can get the unit back and swap the card for you.

All the best

Thanks for the reply.

The system reset didn't help. I never use the SPdif input, or the line input and guitar input at the same time, so the 3 input limit is not the cause.

I think I better open my Receptor and see if sometihng has gone loose. Probably during when I was replacing the old HD with the new 200G one....

This is most likely what caused it, since the drive is located adjacent to the 20 pin connector that connects the guitar board to the PCI audio board. It could have easily have become dislodged during the hard drive replacement process...

First off, please be sure that the connectors are firmly seated in their sockets.

Did you by chance remove any of the connectors during installation? If so it is critical that the connector is oriented the correct way. There is a red stripe along the cable. That red stripe should be on the top-most side of the connector on the guitar board itself, and it should be on the rear-most side of the connector on the PCI card. In other words, the stripe should be on the side of the connector nearest the lid of the unit on the guitar board, and the stripe should be on the side that is nearest the audio outputs on the back of the unit.

Feel free to call me if you want any additional help and someone here will be happy to walk you through debugging it. Our number is (650) 326-5400.

Dear Bryan,

Stupid me.

As you were typing, I opened the box and found that I did not plug the guitar input connector back onto the card after I installed the new HD. It's working now.

But seriously, I don't know whom to order the new rack ears from. Can you give me a link or an e-mail address so that I can place my order?

Thanks and regards,

Well, that will do it. Glad to hear it's nothing serious.

You really should go back to the dealer and demand the rack ears. We can sell you a replacement pair for $10.00, but you should have received a pair wrapped around the cable in a little plastic bag. If you didn't receive that from the dealer, then they must have opened the box and taken the ears out.

All the best

Dear Bryan,

I will go after the original pair, but I also believe that it might take a while, since I live in Taiwan, very far away from the states.

Can you please let me know from whom I should order the replacement rack ears? The price is fine by me. Thanks.

Please send a mail to sales@museresearch.com with your request. We will then process the order and send them over to you.

I created a simple free plugin to help with this: GH-LRSelector (768KB), which allows you to use the stereo line input as 2 mono ins. Also works with SPDIF in, so you can get a total of 4 mono inputs on Receptor.
