> I've found a lot of their "music" unlistenable and difficult to appreciate, untill you read the essays provided, which leads to think the essays alone should suffice
! ;-) paper music we used to call it: music that works on paper (or in essays) better than it works in sound. i ran into way too much of this during my avant days in germany. it's why i left that world ... or at least left it exclusively.
but if you look at the big picture of creation, then isn't an essay as potentially groundbreaking, thought provoking, creative, and artistically provocative as a piece of music? so why say one OR the other? why not look at both as avenues of expression?

this is "experimentation for the sake of discovering new territory and then cultivating/honing it" rather than "experimentation for the sake of discovering new territory period." there's room for both, ja? :-)

I need to experiment with spending less time at my computer on the internet.

Thanks.... was getting concerned I might have to be able to communicate in my least effective form, the written word.pHz wrote: nah not at all ...

I do know I experiment for fun yet I like working within the 'tired, old whelms of 4/4 and triads" just because I never got much of an opportunity to do so...
As my background is visual sound production, which is always experimental in nature, it's just as much of an experiment for me to do something perceived as 'boring' that I meant as satirical.
It's a bit hard to pull off bad humor without using a really big nail.
Most of my experiments centers around 'the size of the nail'
The last is the bit about perception. I don't have the same perception of audio as I used to, and am re-learning the process.
This is just my pov and I prefer the more experimental works of others, as well as their more genre-constrained efforts.

doesn't saying this, even thinking it perpetuate the "we're better than you" attitude* that has created a war between uptown/downtown composers? a war that has left lots of casualties. to an certain degree: uptown misses out on downtown's passion and risk taking; downtown misses out on uptown's thoughtfulness and technical skill. why can't we all just get along? ;-)
* a trap i also fall into, the "we" and "you" changing as my music changes ... but one which i guard against.

poignant black and white distinctions are also a good way to skip the need to write about the shades of gray inbetween. It also shortens the posts to a mere few sentences, instead of giving them essay-like appearance covering all the aspects valid to discussion.
(this hoping the other participants in discussion are aware of the them, and can take it not as a red cloth, but as an encapsulated point of view)

Just saying I wasn't taking sides to either, but merely encapsulating a point I was trying to get across. Which you already understood.

i think he means it's better to cut to the chase and bring one's own truth in its simplest form without touching too many details in such discussions.
i'm not sure though.

Yeah,
which proves the point really. covering all the aspects makes a difficult read. or maybe I need more practise.

aha. in other words: i should cool it with all the words? ;-) if i've overdone it, i apologize; i just get really excited by all this exchanging of ideas and feelings about music. sounds, words: it's all part of the picture to me. :-)

nono! You've done nothing wrong, or overdone anything. I was just musing about the aspects of forum discussions, nothing to do with your writing.rachmiel wrote:aha. in other words: i should cool it with all the words?if i've overdone it, i apologize
