I really dislike reason. I find it very hard to use (I am used to sequencing and pattern based recording) and the sound quality is not what I need it for. I mistakenly (in my opinion) bought Reason 3 because I had heard such good things about it. The fact that it cannot load vsti instruments or vst effects at all kills it for me. Now, most of what I do is orchestral, so sonar 5 producer and kontakt 2 get a lot more use than fl studio 6, but I use fl studio 6 as the worlds most effective and open ended drum machine!!! By the way, everything FL Studio does uses sampling and samples, so the person that stated that fl studio does not have sampling (as compared to the totally limited NN-XT_ has no idea what they were talking about. FL Studio ONLY uses samples (wav files and sf2 files) to do what it does. It is a VERY complete program that can do ALMOST everything. It's midi capability is AWESOME if you use the onboard piano scroll feature, it does pattern sequencing better than anything out there and is the world's best REWIRE client (I use it in Sonar 5 through rewire and it is FLAWLESS!!!) It syncs perferctly with any host and can load vsti and vst instruments AS A REWIRE CLIENT!!!
I really cannot say enough good things about fl studio 6. Even it's render engine is top of the line. I own a recording studio and, without telling the client, I will render in sonar 5 producer, fl studio 6 and nuendo (what we USED to use) and then ask the client which sounds the best (we do this for fun some times - sick, aren't we?) You guessed it. The client likes the FL Studio 6 mixdown the best! Messed up, isn't it. Then we take off the blindfold and show they were pointing to BRAND X - just kidding - no brand x . . .
Look, use whatever software you are most happy and comfortable with. I own a variety because I never know what situation will call for one of the next. For example, I mostly have Kontakt 2 for the included VSL lite library and my KHSO Emerald symphonic collection - which works incredibly well in kontakt 2 (Kontakt 2 as a vsti instrument).
Most the time I use Sonar 5 Producer for recording. With it's 64 bit engine, it sounds AMAZING and works flawlessly with zero instances of crashing or freezing up on me.
I use FL Studio for rhythm and arpeggio / backing related work - as a rewire client - and it works great too, as previously stated!
Reason 3 sits on the shelf and gathers dust. Not one client has cared whether we use it or not. And after they hear FL Studio 6, they REALLY don't care. And, yes, we included a Reason 3 mixdown (which was almost impossible because of the LIMITED way it works as a DAW) and not one person liked it over anything else.

Reason 3 is simply awesome.

To those who keep going on about a version 3.5, I think you have become your worst enemies. By (unjustly, imho) whining about the version 3.0 upgrade, you have raised the stakes for the Props to an extent where the next upgrade has to be really massive. In my opinion, it's the whiners that have meant there will be no 3.5 at all now... we'll almost certainly have to wait for a very significant version 4.0 paid upgrade instead.
Well I know you're not a very happy 3.0 upgrade customer from your previous post. Suffice it to say that - self determining though they appear to be - user reaction cannot be ignored even by the Props. What does people "whinning" have to do with a companies policies?
Also, the timescale from 2.0 to 2.5 was a matter of months. It is now a full year since version 3.0 came out and NAMM showed no annoucements of anything new. Nor are there public betas taking place at present.
I think that we can therefore assume that the next upgrade will need to be 1) significant, because of the number of people they employ, none of whom are sitting there doing nothing; and 2) paid for, to fund their ongoing development.
It's also worth bearing in mind this, and "reading between the lines":

Perhaps as you say I am being idiotic... still, when it comes to playing a guessing game, my instincts tell me that the Props are going for something big (I suspect an audio recording option in Reason) and it will be announced late summer, possibly in Frankfurt.

HI
Probably a good instinct 'headquest': if nothing else the overhead and compatability hit on an audio set-up is likely to keep Reason lightweight in resource usage but at the same time opening up their market ... substantially?
I think if they could possibly throw in either up-dated versions of their synths or introduce something new (Bass/lead synth? more effects or up-dates to the present ones) they could be in for the kill in 2007.

Yes you're right. The timescale from 2.0 to 2.5 was a matter of months. 11 short months. Nowhere near a year.headquest wrote:

I wish I had your powers of deduction. "Something big for next major release". Who would have thunk it?
I think they aimed for something really big for 3.0 and missed.
As far as audio, yes its been a request since version 1. So I hope they do something about it. Probably wont be in Reason tho. Maybe some new thing they'll want me to crossgrade to. We'll see at Frankfurt I guess.

I dunno, the Combinator seemes like a pretty good "big" feature to hang a release on to me and I think if they put audio recording into the next version a lot of people may have to change their attitude towards it. Not me, of course, I don't have to do anything if I don't want to.

Perhaps you could explain how you record guitar into Reason using ONLY Reason.Amberience wrote:I've made pieces with Reason that use guitar, vocals, and bass.. don't know what you're doing wrong.Teksonik wrote:Basic Channel you should try Toxic 2 or Purity or Wusikstation in Reason, they are really awesome synths! You said live recording, that implies some live performance. For that there is Hammer - works really well. For the recording part, I use the Rex player and the samplers.Teksonik wrote:Perhaps you could explain how you record guitar into Reason using ONLY Reason.Amberience wrote:I've made pieces with Reason that use guitar, vocals, and bass.. don't know what you're doing wrong.Teksonik wrote:Basic Channel you should try Toxic 2 or Purity or Wusikstation in Reason, they are really awesome synths! At first glance you'd think that English was not your first language but I see you are from London. So how do you see recording being achieved in devices that only do playback?

Maybe I'll clear it up - I record in a seperate program. Doesn't matter how I get the audio into Reason, the point is I do it. The prick before me insinuated that Reason couldn't work well with instruments just because it doesn't have live recording inputs, I beg to differ.BONES wrote:At first glance you'd think that English was not your first language but I see you are from London. Hey I'm a prick! The point is that you CAN'T RECORD AUDIO into Reason without other software. Why not just buy a real Music Production Suite to begin with and stop fuc*ing with work arounds. Why is it that whenever the discussion of Reason comes up I get this strange feeling that some people haven't actually paid for the software and hence don't get the poor value for money that Reason represents. Get some sleep Robocop.
