In an SOS interview with the Props, they themselves said they don't want to treat Reason as a host but rather, the best soft synth on the market.

HA HA i say, close but no cigar. Reaktor beat em to the punch.

sorry your majesty, I mean, spaceman. :D I thought you referred to me...which is quite fair, since I'm pedantic even while I'm sleeping. Greetings mate.

Reason is not a host, simply because it doesn't 'host' anything. When we talk about a 'host' in regard to audio apps, we are clearly talking about a program that can 'host' something (in this case mostly plug-ins). I also agree that this is 'just' semantics, but for the sake of the argument let's not pretend it is something it's not and therfor not muddy the definitions and/or perceptions.

So Reason is NOT a host, but it also doesn't pretend to be one. Aside of this, I kinda like Reason. If I had the money for it I would probably add it to my setup. However, with all the stuff I already have there is no real reason (pardon the pun) to spring for it for me.

@origami: Your sig is getting truncated. You might want to remove the blank line so all the text will show.

@crimson: That's how I think of Reason -- as a rack of instruments, not a host. It's what I bought it for way back when and darn if it doesn't keep making me smile year after year.

When Reason was just released I was thinking about buying it but then I cam across Orion and got that one simple because Orion IS a host and I wanted to use plugins. But I kept lusting for Reason for quite a while and was waiting for Orion to support Rewire so I could use Reason inside Orion. However by the time Orion got Rewire (in Platinum) it also had gotten so many fantastic instruments that adding Reason to my setup became a bit 'overkill'. As I said, if I had the money to burn I would probably get it anyway but it would be pure gear lust :D

One thing I really don't get about Reason is why they stick to the 'vertical rack' paradigm. The synths and stuff look great but running it on my dual monitor setup (2x 19inch @ 1600x1200 res) makes it look quite pathetic and indeed a bit 'toy-like' (even with the sequencer detached)

Lots of people have asked for resizing (unlikely IMO) or a double rack option for side-by-side operation. Until 3.0 I was jonesing for something like this too, but the Combi helped considerably along those lines. Not perfect but I don't have to do so much scrolling any more.

A side-by-side option would indeed help but it's not really the scrolling that I worry about (my screen is 1200 pix high :D ). The point is that many musicians invest in larger screens and dual screen setups. It's something you invest in. So when I load Reason onto my screen I see a lot of screenspace that's not being used. Every other music application (hosts, sequencers, wave-editors, etc.) are using every inch of available space as the developers recognize that development among their users. Even a plugin like VAZ2010 that I have can use all my screenspace.

So it's not really about usability but more about perception. I'm sure that many of the people that don't 'like' Reason, are translating this issue into the idea that the Props are lagging behind in the industry. And besides the stable coding and low CPU loads I must admit that it seems to me as well that they are in fact lagging, as there are now more 'virtual studio packages' that can do more or less the same as Reason. For me the only really interesting synth in Reason is the Maelstrom but I wouldn't swap it for the synths I have now bundled in Orion Platinum (Toxic is wicked  )

I like a small GUI. Arturia's minimoog (to name a random example) is a beauty but wow, does it eat screen real estate. :-D

Malstrom's a lot of fun, agreed. The new series of effects units are also excellent. That's driving a lot of the wishes for audio input. I'm on record as hoping to see bidirectional Rewire, but am not counting on it. I'll use what I've got and take the future as it arrives.

HI

I can't understand why the rack takes such a central part in the visual feast that is Reason ... I rarely worry about synth GUI's unless I am tweaking them - beyond that please don't tell me people like to have them on the screen simply for the aesthetic appeal!

Reason on dual monitors is not an optimized way of working ... but then Reason on a single screen isn't either, IMO.

I think the Propp's could go a long (towards an up-date) way by simply looking at redesigning the rack to better 'fit' a single monitor, sort the bloody arrange page out so you can colour your own clips, man that piano-roll could do with a revamp to be less stressfull on the eyes, throw in dual monitor support with more detachable windows and things could take a jump without even doing anything to the engine.

I like Reason; but it is one other program. too many!

Flipper.

Good ideas, and fodder for the Props feature request board. Post 'em there if you like. The Props do pay attention to suggestions, though they don't always "take requests" and the occasional demanders are likely to meet with a chilly reception.

Have you separated your sequencer from the rack? I run Reason on my laptop at 1600x1200. I separate the rack and the sequencer so the rack is at 800x1200 and the sequencer is at 800x1200. If I need to work more in the sequencer I just maximize that window to 1600x1200. Also, if I have 2 monitors setup, I throw the sequencer in one window and maximize it.

Works great for me.

Exactly. All issues that have been brought up since 2001. Its now 2006, and they havent really dealt with it. Too busy getting their asses kissed by all the fanatic newbies that dont know any better. I know because I used to be one. I used to post things like "Reason is awsome, I would never switch to cubase no matter what" in the Reason forums back in the day haha. I was an idiot and didnt understand that there are better ways to deal with plug's without them looking like hardware.

ok, I got it, reason is not a sequencer, it is only a Synth. Man, Props can really confuse people.
