Dogod:dogod wrote:re: Irony
I know you Yanks have a hard time with this concept(Just kiddin')
Well, IK's statement can be seen as ironic now that it was 100% false. The pain = the pain of waiting... etc, etc.... I'm boring myself here
I'm a Canadian. The "motherland" isn't preserving the language any better than the States. That's neither here nor there since I consider language to be dynamic, but I'm simply stating that a Brit (I'm assuming you're a Brit, the same way you assumed I was American.. though you didn't HAVE to guess since my location is right there in my tagline) has no real claim to superiority with the language since in most parts of the UK-- particularly in everyday speech-- English is barely recognizable as such.
I'm also an English Literature teacher, so I don't think I have any problem whatsoever understanding irony OR sarcasm.
I'm planning to have beef steak for dinner tonight. If someone asks me today, "What will you have for dinner?" I will tell them, "a nice steak." If I get home to discover that my girlfriend has already gone ahead and made a nice fettucine alfredo, it'll turn out that I'm not having steak after all. But that won't be irony. I'm sure as a non-yank, you can follow through with the counter-example and apply it to the situation at hand, and you will see that it's not irony.
And if you could find irony according to some obscure or poor definition (hey, miracles happen, or people can twist words to suit their argument), you still couldn't find intent in IK's false release date. Without intent, there's no sarcasm. Your original point was about sarcasm, of which irony is only one component.
Furthermore, last I checked, ad hominem arguments ("I know you have a hard time...") and incomplete syllogisms ("etc., etc...") aren't considered effective strategies in logic.
Suddenly I'm NOT bored!

U call me a POMMIE, you will DIE..... LOL

ps. Think of it like this... What if IK did it on purpose? Do you now get it?
pps. Arguing over a joke's semantics kinda defeats the whole purpose

Canadians don't use that term.dogod wrote:U call me a POMMIE, you will DIE..... LOL
Perhaps, but it would still be a very poor example of sarcasm.ps. Think of it like this... What if IK did it on purpose? Do you now get it?
Well, unless you're like me and find the debate over semantic to be more interesting than the joke itself.pps. Arguing over a joke's semantics kinda defeats the whole purpose
