Receptor features harmonized copy protection?

I was just re-reading the "Why Receptor" page at Muse trying to decide whether to keep it or just rack a Mac Mini, and came across this one. I had to use the standard NI authorization process for Kontakt2 and Elektrik Piano which involved typing in enormously long keys (no copy/paste from email). Is this harmonized iLok protection supposed to work with NI stuff?

All of the NI products (with the exception of B4, FM7, Kompakt and Pro-53) are not iLok protected. We have whats called User Installable installers to aid in installing these plugins. The registration process would remain exactly the same as NI registration with the operations being done on the mounted receptor drive. In other words there is no iLok protection on most NI plugins. Copying and pasting the 16 digits work for Macs as of now and will be available for PCs as well in the future. If you are a Mac user, select the digits using AppleC, go to the receptor remote and choose the field where you'd like to paste, go to the top menu and perform a paste.

Fair enough. So the claim is a bit overstated, then. I would love to have had Muse figure out how to harmonize protection for NI through iLok. The actualy claim is that protection is harmonized only for those premium plugins which have been officially Receptorized? Is NI planning to Receptorize their lineup?

Thanks,

Although a bit tedious, the NI authorization process is not such a big deal if you have the Receptor drive mounted on your PC/Mac via SMB. I saved all of the authorization keys to disk as text file, then opened them in the NI Registration Tool. No manual typing or pasting involved. And you only have to do it once...

The other thing to consider about the user-installable VST's is that if you lose your iLok or forget it for a gig, you are still good to go. I understand the need for copy-protection, but I am constantly checking my iLok to make sure I have it.

The iLok should come with a lanyard that can be clipped to something in case it is knocked out of its port. I always use a back panel port also. It sticks out too far in the front panel port when the Receptor is in my rack.

You can put your iLok inside. Open the top cover, unscrew the front USB connector and turn it around so it faces the back. Muse can sell you a kit if you want to do it nicely.

That's clever, but what if you want to add another license to it?
On our rig, the Receptor's iLok is in one of the back USB ports (I felt these are more protected), with a crimped-on wire lanyard attaching it to the rear rack rail - long enough to connect to a laptop easily for managing authorizations.

I've considered the port reversal, but you are faced with some disassembly and reassembly as you suggest when you purchase an iLok VST.

Dan, is there physical support and/or some sort of locking mechanism for the iLok when installed inside a Receptor? I would be worried that if the unit took a bounce on its back that the iLok may become dislodged and would need to be reinserted.

A lot of the touring bands keep their iLok inside. Usually, they would buy all the iLok licenses they need, then go on tour. You should ask for the touring kit from Muse, and that one will keep you iLok secure during transport.

Nope, NI is not planning on embracing the PACE copy protection (for most of its current and future software products) which receptor uses for its supported plugins; not atleast at this point. Though as of now FM7, Kompakt, Pro-53 and B4 are PACE protected and the licenses are downloadable to your iLok.
