I just got Ableton 5 myself, (had tried demos way back at 3 but found it wasn't sophisticated enough with midi editing) my how that has all changed. It is an inspiring piece of software, I still refuse to use any external vstis in it so I think I'll get operator as well...but sweet Jesus....I can't imagine someone being dissapointed even less than immediatley inspireD would surprise me.. I tend to create way more epic stuff in Ableton... (I'm still on my first trak though)

Similar to Orion, pattern/grid based composing (i was brought up using Roland/Boss stuff so the grid and pattern method is a piece of cake for me)
Whats about these days that fits into that kinda 'ball park'
I think only eXT is left then

I don't quite get the idea of eXT being a "pattern based host"... but then I don't quite get the idea of eXT at all yet!
(More effort required on my part, no doubt!)
And perhaps the much anticipated version 2 will be a better integrated programme
In the meantime, I hope you're enjoying the Ableton demo Krim

what's not 'integrated' enough for you about eXT?headquest wrote:

something tells me he won't like P5 or Live
but then again, last saturday something told me to drink a stupendous amount of guinness, so maybe I should stop listening to it

@ Jens:
Just couldn't work out the relationship between the (very nice) modular section and the internal workings of the (not so nice imho) sequencer. I get the impression from the various posts about version 2 that this may be improved. Looking forward to demoing version 2, and hoping it will all make more sense to me then

hi there, refering to the original question
in EXT you can use a midi part with a different midi "patterns" assingned to a different key on your keyboard. these can be triggered live by playing the keyboard, or can be sequenced in the piano roll editor of the sequencer module, which essentially works like a "playlist". EXT also features a "live mode" feature in the sequencer, but as i have never used it i cant comment on how it works, but imagine it works similar to ableton.
it is also worth mentioning that midi can be edited in the piano roll in a similar way to how trackers input notes, because the step edit mode alows full interaction with the computer keyboard.
i think ext would be the best choice for your host, mainly because it does pattern bassed sequencing extremely well, which is not imidiately obvious at first, but extremely flexibleIm looking into other hosts, but im very fussy about the way i work, and im not prepared to spent a long time learning a new app, so it needs to be...

So Far, the demo's i tried today were very uninspiring, and some had way too much of a learning curve (although one may be of use for live work...)
